Job Description
This is a senior advisory and analytics position on a remote contract engagement of 40 hours per week. The analyst is the go-to contact for engineering and R&D groups that have questions about cloud costs, replying in chat and other asynchronous channels.
Much of the day revolves around the largest R&D spenders. The analyst checks monthly cloud bills with those groups, points out where savings are possible, learns what is planned on the roadmap and what those plans may cost, and keeps notes on meetings and recurring cost patterns. The role also keeps an eye on cloud and AI/LLM spend for sudden jumps and waste, examines unexpected variances, and produces written root-cause analyses for the owners of each team.
Forecasting and reporting are the second strand. The analyst helps square the central forecast with what individual teams expect, records any mismatches, and feeds field knowledge, including what drives AI/LLM costs, into showback reporting. Central budgeting authority, contract negotiation models for vendors, and building internal tooling are excluded from this work.
The position suits a seasoned cloud financial operations specialist who likes advising technical staff and making numbers understandable. Findings are logged in Jira and discussed over Slack, so careful written communication is essential. The posting says enterprise background is strongly preferred. No salary is given.
Responsibilities
- Answer cloud cost questions from engineering teams over Slack and other asynchronous channels
- Hold recurring spend reviews with the heaviest R&D spenders and follow up on savings ideas
- Monitor cloud and AI/LLM spend for spikes and waste
- Dig into spending variances and write root-cause reports for team owners
- Record investigations in Jira and surface key results for the monthly report
- Square central forecasts with team projections during the monthly cycle
- Build team-level cost projections and track investments and initiatives
- Raise cost awareness through training and by keeping the technical wiki current
Requirements
- Senior background in FinOps, meaning cloud financial operations
- Solid skill in managing cloud spend and improving its efficiency
- History of probing unexpected spend and writing clear root-cause reports
- Past experience coaching R&D or engineering groups directly
- Experience forecasting cloud costs and reconciling central and team-level figures
- Knowledge of what drives OpenAI and other LLM costs, and of tracking LLM spend
- Cost modeling and tracking of team investments or initiatives
- Working use of Jira and Slack
- Experience keeping technical docs or wikis current and contributing to recurring reports such as Showback
- Able to work APAC hours, with partial overlap with Pacific and afternoon Central hours
- Clear writing and speaking
Qualifications
- Expertise in AI/LLM governance
- Expertise in managing variable AI/LLM costs
- Enterprise-scale experience (strongly preferred)
