Job Description

The Future of Life Institute (FLI), an independent non-profit founded in 2014, is seeking an AI Industry Associate/Lead to join their distributed, remote team. Operating primarily virtually with a staff of roughly 40, FLI focuses on steering transformative technologies away from extreme risks and toward benefiting humanity through grantmaking, educational outreach, and policy engagement. In this role, the selected professional will champion a pro-human pathway for artificial intelligence development, emphasizing verifiable, human-centered, and controllable tools rather than maximally autonomous general systems.

The person in this position will formulate strategic arguments, monitor technical approaches outside the main scaling trend—such as smaller models, robotics, open-source initiatives, and industrial data uses—and interact with international policymakers, including groups in Canada, Brazil, and EU member states. The title and level of responsibility will be tailored to fit the background of the hired candidate, who will report directly to the Head of European Policy and Research. Ideal candidates will possess strong technical fluency in advanced artificial intelligence, proven stakeholder management capabilities, and a commitment to mitigating catastrophic risks while advancing positive futures.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate rigorous strategic arguments demonstrating that credible artificial intelligence strategies do not require building or adopting maximally autonomous general systems
  • Monitor and support technical paths outside of hyperscaling, including efficient models, open-source and open-science initiatives, physical robotics, and scientific data applications
  • Engage with policymakers in regions such as Canada, Brazil, European Union Member States, and the Brussels AI Office regarding sovereign intelligence strategies
  • Translate complex strategies into policy-ready recommendations and actionable asks for lawmakers

Requirements

  • Experience as a technology strategist within industry, startups, or the policy sector, ideally focusing on artificial intelligence policy
  • Sufficient technical fluency regarding advanced artificial intelligence capabilities trajectories, agentic systems, and verification methods to engage credibly with experts
  • Demonstrated experience or capacity to engage policymakers outside of the US and China
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to produce policy-ready analysis and represent the organization in expert settings
  • Ability to translate technical concepts clearly for non-technical audiences
  • Strong stakeholder management and partnership-building skills across industry, institutions, and international partners
  • High level of independence and initiative to own a strategy line in a fast-paced environment
  • Alignment with the organization mission of mitigating catastrophic risks and fostering positive futures

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in economics, computer science, or a technical artificial intelligence discipline
  • Previous experience working at a tech startup or familiarity with operational dynamics in the technology sector
  • Background in or close knowledge of safety-sensitive industrial sectors where reliability is an operational requirement
  • Existing professional network among frontier artificial intelligence researchers and relevant policymakers

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Annual compensation ranging from EUR 82,000 to EUR 150,000, varying based on location and experience
  • 25 days of paid time off per year
  • Paid parental leave
  • Work from home allowance for office equipment or supplies
  • Professional development budget
  • Location-dependent coverage for health insurance and pension contributions
