Job Description
The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is seeking an AI Industry Associate or Lead to help shape a human-centered approach to artificial intelligence development. Founded in 2014, FLI operates as an independent non-profit organization focused on steering transformative technologies away from extreme risks and toward positive outcomes for humanity. The organization engages lawmakers, key stakeholders, and the public on issues related to advanced technologies, supported by a distributed international team of roughly 40 staff members.
In this position, the chosen professional will formulate strategic frameworks promoting verifiable, controllable, and purpose-driven AI alternatives that amplify human capability rather than replace workers entirely. The role involves tracking non-hyperscaling technical developments, building coalitions with international policymakers, and producing actionable policy recommendations. FLI is open to varying levels of seniority, determining the exact title and scope based on the candidate's background. This position reports directly to the Head of European Policy and Research.
Responsibilities
- Formulate robust arguments demonstrating that credible AI strategies do not require building maximally general, autonomous systems
- Monitor and support alternative technical paths including smaller or efficient models, open-source and open-science AI, physical robotics, and industrial data applications
- Engage with policymakers in jurisdictions such as Canada, Brazil, EU member states, and the Brussels AI Office regarding sovereign AI strategies
- Translate complex strategic concepts into practical, policy-ready recommendations
Requirements
- Experience as a technology strategist within industry, a startup, or the policy sector
- Sufficient technical fluency in advanced artificial intelligence concepts, including capabilities trajectories, agentic systems, and verification methodologies
- Demonstrated experience or capacity to engage policymakers outside of the US and China
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities for presenting technical information to non-technical audiences
- Proven stakeholder management and partnership-building skills across international and industry institutions
- High level of independence and initiative to own a strategic area of work
- Alignment with the mission of mitigating catastrophic risks and advancing beneficial futures for humanity
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in economics, computer science, or a related technical AI discipline
- Prior background working at a tech startup or similar technology industry environments
- Familiarity with safety-sensitive industrial sectors where reliability is an operational necessity
- Existing professional network among frontier AI researchers and relevant public policy makers
