Job Description

Thumbtack is hiring an Applied Scientist for its Pro Growth group, which studies how service professionals come onto the platform, how quickly they become active, and how supply should be forecast by market and trade. Thumbtack links homeowners with local service businesses across the United States. This full-time role is remote.

The scientist manages projects from defining the problem through experiment design, model launch and measuring business impact. Typical problems include lead scoring, activation models for new professionals, churn prediction, market-level supply forecasts and incrementality tests. The group also works on LLM-based onboarding agents. The scientist works in a small product team with engineers, product managers and fellow applied scientists.

Applicants should have graduate-level training in a quantitative area such as computer science, statistics or economics, or an equivalent background from industry. Three or more years in applied science, data science or ML engineering, with models owned in production, is required. Experience in marketplace, supply chain or growth settings is needed, along with a grasp of classification, regression, embeddings and causal inference. Python and SQL fluency is expected, and experience with distributed data tools such as Spark or Databricks is a plus.

The posting gives an expected base range of $161,500 to $209,000 for residents of Ontario and British Columbia. Actual offers depend on job level, qualifications and skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead applied science projects from framing the problem through production, aimed at bringing pros in, activating them, keeping them and keeping supply healthy
  • Build and launch ML models for lead scoring, market supply forecasting, onboarding and churn
  • Design and run marketplace experiments that measure the effect of models and product changes
  • Study marketplace activity and professional profiles to surface supply trends and risks
  • Coordinate with engineering, product, business development and marketing to keep ML systems working in production
  • Help expand the team's LLM tooling and evaluation coverage

Requirements

  • Graduate training in a quantitative discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • Three or more years in applied science, data science or ML engineering, owning production models
  • Background in marketplace, supply chain or growth work
  • Working knowledge of classification, regression, embeddings and causal inference
  • Ability to read, write and debug Python and SQL
  • Familiarity with current LLMs, agentic AI practices, and large-scale tools such as Spark or Databricks
  • A track record of taking at least one ML project from start to finish in production
