In this role, the attorney will report directly to the General Counsel while collaborating closely with human resources professionals and operational leaders.

The successful candidate will take charge of managing employment disputes, handling everything from agency complaints and demand letters through formal litigation and arbitration. Additionally, the counsel will provide daily guidance on labor matters across a workforce spanning multiple states, oversee outside counsel, and assist with insurance claims related to employment practices. Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the General Counsel and support reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors on material legal matters.

  • Monitor outside counsel invoicing and enforce company billing guidelines.
  • Advise HR and property leadership regarding terminations, corrective actions, and escalated workplace investigations.
  • Provide guidance on leave programs, accommodation requests, and return-to-work protocols.
  • Draft and review the employee handbook, HR policies, and employment agreements while maintaining compliance across multiple states.
  • Coordinate with insurance brokers and carriers regarding employment practices liability claims and coverage questions.
  • Collaborate with management and HR to produce training materials and deliver practical legal advice.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing within at least one state bar.
  • Eligibility to register as in-house counsel with the Texas Board of Law Examiners if not licensed in Texas.
  • Three to five years of employment and labor law experience gained at a law firm, in-house, or both.
  • Direct experience handling agency charges and employment litigation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Availability to travel approximately 10 percent of the time annually for internal meetings or property visits.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in property management, real estate, or another multi-site industry.
  • Familiarity with HRIS and electronic discovery platforms.
