Abby Care is hiring an Associate General Counsel, Privacy, Product & AI to lead its day-to-day privacy and artificial intelligence governance operations. The organization builds an AI-native platform designed to support family caregivers and improve home care delivery alongside clinical oversight. Operating in a rapidly changing regulatory landscape, this senior role requires a player-coach who can balance high-level strategy with hands-on legal reviews. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the incumbent will take ownership of the privacy program covering patient and payor data, scale the HIPAA Privacy framework, and manage the responsible artificial intelligence policy suite. The position involves close collaboration with product, engineering, operations, and clinical teams to secure compliant growth, as well as briefing executive leadership and the Board of Directors on relevant risks.
This is a full-time, hybrid position based in San Francisco, California, with remote flexibility available. The salary range offered for this role is USD 250,000 to 275,000 per year. The ideal candidate is an experienced legal professional ready to establish frameworks, manage outside counsel, and guide a growing team through complex healthcare technology challenges.
Responsibilities
- Manage the privacy program for patient and payor data, including HIPAA compliance and state privacy regulations
- Oversee the artificial intelligence governance program, responsible artificial intelligence policies, and model risk classifications
- Establish the artificial intelligence use case review framework, risk tiering, and service level agreements
- Execute final legal sign-offs and escalate enterprise risks to the General Counsel
- Formulate regulatory change management strategies addressing federal and state privacy, health data, and artificial intelligence laws
- Administer the business associate agreement program from standard templates to vendor risk integration
- Lead privacy and data-use terms in payor relationships, including data use agreements and Medicaid security requirements
- Partner with product, engineering, operations, and clinical teams on privacy and product-regulatory implications
- Coordinate with security and information technology on HIPAA Security Rule compliance and certifications like SOC 2 and HITRUST
- Lead privacy and artificial intelligence incident response, investigations, breach analysis, and regulator notifications
- Present privacy and artificial intelligence risk sections to the Board of Directors
- Manage outside privacy and artificial intelligence counsel relationships, budgets, and scopes of work
- Hire, mentor, and lead the expanding privacy and artificial intelligence team
- Serve as the designated HIPAA Privacy Officer and collaborate on training programs
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Minimum of 8 years of total legal experience gained in-house, at a leading law firm, or both
- At least 6 years of substantial privacy work and hands-on artificial intelligence governance experience
- Comprehensive working knowledge of HIPAA and HITECH, including Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules
- Demonstrated experience building HIPAA privacy programs and U.S. state privacy and consumer health data compliance
- Track record at a growth-stage or resource-constrained organization of building or rebuilding privacy or artificial intelligence programs
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to advise executives, the Board, regulators, and outside counsel
- Experience advising senior executives and presenting directly to a Board of Directors
Qualifications
- In-house legal experience at a healthcare or healthcare technology company
- Experience advising on healthcare technology deployment such as FDA SaMD or CDS analysis and HHS Section 1557 requirements
- Familiarity with 42 CFR Part 2, the 21st Century Cures Act information blocking rules, and state Medicaid confidentiality regulations
- Familiarity with NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, and other artificial intelligence assurance frameworks
- Prior work history involving state Medicaid agencies, managed care organizations, or government payors
- International Association of Privacy Professionals certifications such as CIPP/US, AIGP, or CIPM
