Job Description
Monzo is hiring a Backend Engineer III to build the in-house banking platform its customers use. The role can be based in London or worked from anywhere in the UK, with occasional London meetings. Around 650 engineers at Monzo work across payments, security, finance, customer ops, financial crime and data.
The engineer works on backend systems for a product millions use daily, with an eye on distributed systems and resilient software. The work involves ambiguity, so the engineer must make data-informed decisions that improve customer outcomes. The level is L40 under Monzo's engineering progression framework, and candidates may be assessed across the full framework.
Monzo's stack includes Go for application code, Cassandra for data storage, Kafka for messaging, Kubernetes and Docker for running services, Envoy Proxy for remote calls, AWS for most production infrastructure, GCP for much of the data platform, and React for public-facing web apps and internal tooling. Monzo also operates physical data centers. Prior knowledge of these tools is not expected, because onboarding covers them.
Candidates need solid backend experience and some background in strongly typed languages such as Go, Java, C or Scala. The hiring process has three stages: an initial call, a take-home assignment or pair programming round, and a final round with system design and behavioral interviews. The whole process usually takes around four weeks.
Base salary is 85,000 to 110,000 GBP plus incentive awards tied to performance. Monzo can sponsor visas and help with relocation, offers a 1,000 GBP yearly learning budget and flexible hours, and covers office travel costs for engineers outside London who are asked to come in. Hiring for backend roles is ongoing, with no closing date.
