Job Description
This full-time W-2 CEO Advisor role is with How To Manage a Small Law Firm (HTM). The advisor meets individually with the leaders of smaller and mid-sized law firms, helping them set a business plan, read their numbers, make tough decisions and follow through. HTM supplies the clients, so the advisor's work centers on advising rather than finding business.
The role is fully remote, but applicants must live in one of 14 listed states: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia or Washington. Candidates living elsewhere will not be considered, according to the posting. A legal background is not needed.
The ideal candidate has run a business and has previously improved outcomes for other owners. They should be comfortable with pricing, margins, cash flow, staffing and operations, and willing to deliver hard feedback and keep owners accountable until a plan is carried out.
Responsibilities
- Hold recurring sessions with owners of law firms to define growth goals and ranked priorities, then draft a plan they can act on.
- Go through the top line, costs, margin and cash position to spot profit gains.
- Help owners work through operational issues such as staffing, workflow, client intake, pricing and systems.
- Push back on weak assumptions, guide owners through hard choices and track whether they follow through.
- Support owners in creating firms that perform well without the owner making every decision and that grow in value over time.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience coaching or advising owners of smaller companies, through consulting, a fractional executive role or leading a peer group
- Owned the full P&L as an owner, chief executive or president, answerable for the whole business rather than one unit
- Experience running a business with annual revenue of roughly $500K to $30M
- Practical grasp of profit drivers: price-setting, margin, liquidity, staff and processes
- Direct communication and follow-through, including on hard calls
- Must live in one of the 14 eligible states
Qualifications
- A plus: prior experience with professional-services practices, either leading one or advising the people who own them
Core Skills
Benefits
- Elite Benefits Bundle from HTM (specific contents not listed in the posting)
- Uncapped performance opportunity, with terms set by the compensation plan
