Job Description

Smile Digital Health seeks a Cloud Engineer specializing in Automation to design, construct, maintain, and enhance production-grade automation infrastructure supporting the organization, its partners, and clients. The company develops an innovative FHIR-based data management platform utilized across more than 20 countries to improve healthcare data exchange and global health delivery. This position focuses on driving strategic improvements in how infrastructure is built and operated by removing manual work, optimizing build speed, reducing platform expenses, and applying artificial intelligence to daily engineering tasks.

This role suits professionals with extensive cloud engineering and DevOps experience who excel at managing pipelines, infrastructure as code, environments, and disaster recovery procedures. The person in this position will collaborate closely with platform engineering, solution engineering, service operations, and QA teams to establish robust automated workflows. Daily duties involve managing build and release engineering, orchestrating Terraform and Helm, implementing GitOps continuous delivery, and automating business continuity protocols.

Smile Digital Health fosters an inclusive workplace environment that values diversity and equitable hiring practices. The company offers competitive compensation alongside health benefits, flexible time away, and various employee support programs. Candidates should note that artificial intelligence may assist portions of the recruitment review process, although all final hiring decisions rest entirely with human reviewers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage build and release engineering by reviewing repositories and consolidating Azure DevOps pipeline YAML onto shared reusable templates
  • Identify and replace manual tasks with scheduled, auditable automation including patching, secret rotation, scaling, and reporting
  • Deploy GitOps continuous delivery featuring declarative deployments, automated reconciliation, drift detection, and rollback
  • Automate line-of-business environments end-to-end for on-demand provisioning and teardown across Azure services
  • Handle business continuity and disaster recovery via backup validation, failover testing, and measured RTO and RPO metrics
  • Maintain Helm and Terraform configurations through reusable charting, versioned modules, and defined state boundaries
  • Operate and harden in-cluster platform services deployed via Helm with health probes and resource limits
  • Implement policy-as-code guardrails, security scans, and code-defined alerts and dashboards within pipelines
  • Incorporate AI-assisted engineering practices into daily team workflows and contribute to the shared skill library
  • Troubleshoot staging and production issues while documenting automated processes for team operation

Requirements

  • Minimum of six years of hands-on cloud engineering, DevOps, or platform engineering background
  • At least one to two years of production experience utilizing infrastructure as code and CI/CD automation on Microsoft Azure
  • Deep practical expertise in Terraform, Helm, Azure DevOps pipelines, and GitOps delivery frameworks like Argo CD or Flux
  • Strong Terraform capabilities covering module design, provider version control, state management, and refactoring
  • Experience with Helm chart authoring, Kubernetes, and Azure Kubernetes Service
  • Familiarity across Azure services such as AKS, Key Vault, Storage, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, networking, and identity
  • Practical background automating backup, restore, and failover with measured recovery metrics
  • Experience utilizing agentic coding tools while safeguarding confidential data
  • Hands-on practice running and hardening production workloads on Kubernetes
  • Proficiency in Kafka operations including topic design, consumer group sizing, and latency trade-offs
  • Strong coding abilities in Python and Bash for building maintainable tooling

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience migrating between Kafka platforms including Confluent, HDInsight, MSK, or self-managed deployments
  • Familiarity with FinOps practices and Azure Cost Management
  • Background working within regulated environments involving healthcare or protected health information
  • HashiCorp Terraform Associate certification
  • Microsoft certifications including AZ-104, AZ-400, or AZ-305
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator or Certified Kubernetes Application Developer certification
  • Observability as code experience utilizing Azure Monitor, Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry
