Job Description
Azul seeks a Compiler Performance Engineer to join its distributed group of compiler specialists. Focused entirely on Java, Azul develops the Java platform for modern cloud enterprises and maintains Falcon, the optimizing just-in-time compiler inside Azul Platform Prime. This position does not involve building a compiler from scratch or working on a front end. Instead, the chosen professional will work on an existing production compiler utilized by major enterprises to locate inefficiencies in generated machine code and resolve them within the optimizer and code generator.
This opportunity is well-suited for engineers with a strong background in low-level performance or compiler technology who want to directly influence real workloads. Team members analyze benchmarks and customer applications, trace execution gaps to their root causes, and implement mid-end and back-end improvements. Daily responsibilities include enhancing vectorization, loop transformations, inlining, and speculative optimizations for x86_64 and AArch64 architectures. Candidates may choose to work fully remote, hybrid, or from the company offices located in Prague, Limassol, or Belgrade.
Azul operates globally and provides flexible working hours along with top-tier hardware choices such as a MacBook Pro. The organization offers competitive compensation backed by five weeks of holiday and five sick days, plus a referral program. AI tools may assist parts of the recruitment process, but final hiring decisions remain with human reviewers.
Responsibilities
- Examine Java benchmarks and customer workloads to evaluate performance, locate inefficiencies in generated code, and determine their root causes within the compiler
- Develop and refine optimizations in the middle and back ends of Falcon, covering inlining, vectorization, loop transformations, redundancy elimination, and speculative optimizations
- Enhance code generation processes targeting x86_64 and AArch64 architectures
- Create benchmarks and tests to validate enhancements and prevent performance regressions
- Submit upstream contributions to LLVM where appropriate
Requirements
- At least two years of professional background working with compilers, low-level performance engineering, or JIT compilers
- Demonstrated ability in C++ design and programming
- Firm grasp of compiler optimization concepts including data flow analysis, loop transformations, and static single assignment
- Capability to read assembly language and analyze the efficiency of instruction sequences
Qualifications
- Familiarity with LLVM IR, LLVM optimization passes, or alternative optimizing compilers such as Graal, V8, HotSpot C2, or GCC
- Practical use of performance profiling utilities like perf, async profiler, or VTune
- Understanding of x86_64 or AArch64 microarchitecture
- Exposure to JVM internals or programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, or Scala
- Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Science concentrating on compilers or performance
Core Skills
Benefits
- Choice of hardware including a MacBook Pro
- Five weeks of holidays and five sick days
- Flexible working hours
- Option for full-remote, hybrid, or office-based work in Prague, Limassol, or Belgrade
- Competitive compensation
- Employee referral program
