Protective Life seeks a Counsel for its Employee Benefits Division to serve as a key regulatory and compliance advisor. In this fully remote, full-time position, the professional will focus on statutory state Paid Family & Medical Leave private plans alongside other group insurance offerings such as disability, life, dental, and supplemental health products. Protective Life helps customers navigate life uncertainties by providing protection and peace of mind. This role suits compliance professionals who can navigate complex regulations and provide practical business guidance in an evolving industry.
The person in this position will collaborate closely with various internal teams including Product, Operations, Claims, Underwriting, Actuarial, Distribution, and Legal stakeholders. Responsibilities involve evaluating legal and regulatory developments, reviewing policy documentation and marketing materials, participating in cross-functional strategic projects, conducting compliance research, and supporting regulatory filings or examinations. The target compensation ranges from $145,000 to $180,000 annually, accompanied by additional incentive opportunities based on company and individual performance. Responsibilities
- Track and interpret state and federal laws and regulations affecting employee benefits and statutory leave products
- Advise internal business units on compliance matters concerning product development, claims, operations, and distribution
- Examine policy forms, certificates, riders, training guides, and promotional content for regulatory adherence
- Manage regulatory research and assist with insurance department reporting, examinations, inquiries, and complaints
- Act as the compliance representative during cross-functional strategic initiatives and product launches
- Design and present training materials addressing emerging regulatory updates and compliance obligations
- Review legislative changes through trade groups to draft impact reports and recommendations for internal teams
- Build and maintain internal governance policies, procedures, and risk controls
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in good standing within at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Roughly five years of relevant professional background or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in legal research, analytical thinking, and issue resolution
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities to translate complex regulations into business advice
- Capacity to collaborate across teams, grasp new topics quickly, and balance multiple tasks
Qualifications
- Hands-on background supporting employee benefits, group insurance, disability insurance, or leave management
- Insurance carrier experience or law firm practice centering on insurance regulatory matters
- Demonstrated ability in interpreting state and federal insurance regulations and guiding business operations
