Job Description
Stack Exchange operates Stack Overflow, a widely used platform for developers to find programming answers, collaborate, and discover career opportunities. The organization functions as a remote-first entity with hiring hubs located in the US, Canada, the UK, and Germany.
The company is seeking a Data Engineer to design and deliver data capabilities that support new application features. In this role, the professional will collaborate closely with software engineers and product partners to build scalable connections, establish reliable data contracts, and transform raw data into consistent models. Responsibilities include building ingestion and transformation workflows, maintaining tenant boundaries and regional constraints, and ensuring pipeline resilience through incremental processing and observability. This position suits an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex data challenges in a distributed work environment.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with engineering teams to translate application requirements into data models, pipeline designs, and clear system interfaces.
- Build and operate production data operations utilizing SQL, Python, PySpark, and cloud data tools like Databricks.
- Construct ingestion and transformation workflows to supply usable data to application services and downstream consumers.
- Implement tenant-aware data flows that respect source permissions, update requirements, deletions, and regional constraints.
- Enhance pipeline resilience by incorporating incremental processing, checkpointing, retries, replays, and data quality checks.
- Establish observability mechanisms to track data freshness, completeness, progress, and pipeline failures.
- Evaluate architecture and tooling choices to balance reliability, performance, maintainability, and cost.
- Maintain shared datasets and pipelines supporting both application features and internal analytics.
- Contribute to design reviews, testing, documentation, and deployment practices while mentoring junior team members.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience building and operating production data pipelines and contributing to architecture.
- Proficiency in SQL and Python, including relational database work, data modeling, and query optimization.
- Experience integrating external APIs and managing changing schemas, imperfect source data, and incremental updates.
- Familiarity with software engineering practices applied to data systems such as version control, automated testing, CI/CD, and monitoring.
- Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs and collaborate with various stakeholders.
- Experience with Azure or GCP alongside cloud data platforms like Databricks, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, or comparable technologies.
Qualifications
- Experience building data systems for customer-facing applications, multi-tenant products, or third-party integrations.
- Familiarity with document processing, knowledge systems, or AI-powered feature pipelines.
- Background in access controls, data governance, regional requirements, or customer data retention and deletion.
- Experience with event-driven processing, infrastructure as code, and cloud workload cost optimization.
