Job Description
J.D. Power provides proprietary data, analytics and industry expertise to the auto industry. It is hiring a full-time Data Engineer based in Canada, for an existing vacancy that reports to the Senior Manager of Data Engineering and Data Science. The company is moving its key data to Snowflake so AI assistants and agents can return reliable, traceable responses on vehicle transactions, incentives, valuations and purchase decisions.
The engineer builds and maintains data pipelines and governed Snowflake semantic views, plus a version-controlled metric catalog that keeps every app and agent aligned on approved definitions. The role adds business context such as glossaries, metric definitions and hierarchies, approved by business owners. It also helps consolidate canonical reference data where several sources currently compete, such as vehicle, dealer and incentive records.
The work includes getting unstructured files ready for Snowflake Cortex Search retrieval, tagged with metadata and origin trails, and working alongside AI engineers so semantic views, metrics and search tools plug into Cortex Analyst and Cortex Agents. The engineer owns pipeline reliability and output quality, sets up monitoring and QA checks including tests on AI response accuracy, and can lead end-to-end projects and mentor junior engineers.
The role requires hands-on Python and SQL, production ETL or ELT work across multiple sources, and a record of creating semantic layers or governed metrics. It also calls for a bachelor's degree and at least five years of full-time data engineering work, or three years if the candidate holds a graduate degree. The posted starting salary range is CAD 90,000 to 100,000 per year. The company does not sponsor employment authorization for this job.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain business context for AI-ready data, including glossaries, metric definitions and rules approved by business owners.
- Draft, test and release controlled Snowflake semantic views plus a version-tracked metric list.
- Help consolidate canonical records such as vehicle, dealer and incentive data.
- Ready unstructured material for Cortex Search lookups, attaching metadata and origin tracking.
- Work with AI engineers to wire semantic views, metrics and search tools into Cortex Analyst and Cortex Agents.
- Build, debug and operate reusable data pipelines, owning their reliability and output quality.
- Set up monitoring and QA checks, including accuracy tests for AI responses.
- Lead end-to-end data projects and mentor junior data engineers.
Requirements
- Strong, hands-on proficiency in Python and SQL, used daily for production pipelines.
- Proven production experience building ETL or ELT pipelines from multiple sources, with monitoring, alerting and automated data quality checks.
- Track record creating semantic layers or governed metrics, with dimensional modeling (facts, dimensions, grain).
- Understanding of how AI apps consume data, with RAG, embeddings, vector search, tool calling and MCP.
- Skill at solving data problems inventively and working on your own with minimal direction.
- Five-plus years full-time in data engineering if holding a bachelor's, or three-plus if holding a graduate degree.
Qualifications
- A quantitative background is preferred, such as statistics, machine learning, or computer science.
- Hands-on Snowflake experience, such as Snowpark, Dynamic Tables and role-based access control (strongly preferred).
- Experience with semantic views or Cortex (a big plus).
- Cloud-platform exposure on BigQuery, AWS or Palantir.
- Engineering habits such as version control, peer review, automated tests and reusable components (a plus).
- Acquaintance with ontologies, knowledge graphs, catalogs and governance practice.
- Experience building an LLM application (a plus).
- Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants, with review and testing of their output.
Core Skills
Benefits
- Health, teeth, eye, income-protection and life coverage.
