Job Description
This remote, full-time Data Engineer II position is a mid-level software role at Horace Mann, an insurance and financial services provider whose core customers are educators. The company serves over 4,100 school districts and manages roughly $12 billion in assets. The engineer builds, maintains and refines software applications and business workflows, handling many development and upkeep tasks independently.
Day to day, the engineer covers the entire development cycle, from gathering requirements through design, coding, testing, release and support. Responsibilities include applying updates, fixing defects, pinpointing system faults and making programs faster, steadier and higher in quality. The work involves close collaboration with peer engineers, DevOps staff, business partners and other departments.
The position also involves continuous integration and delivery work with DevOps, researching technologies and building proofs of concept, and maintaining shared internal packages such as NuGet or npm libraries. Because the role includes guiding less experienced developers, it fits someone who enjoys coaching while staying hands-on with code.
The posted pay range is $76,600 to $106,450 per year and depends on experience and location, among other factors. Candidates should hold a technical college degree or equivalent work experience, have two to four years of experience building software and documenting requirements, and communicate and solve problems well. Exposure to Python, SQL Server, Snowflake, DBT, ADO, Power BI or R is treated as a plus.
