Job Description
Canonical is seeking a visual design manager to lead its visual design practice, which covers brand design and website experiences. The role is a hands-on leadership position for a senior designer who is strong at managing people, owning delivery and thinking strategically. It is full-time and remote.
The manager runs a group of visual designers who handle brand and site work across the company. Projects include marketing campaign assets, data visualisation, print and interface design, plus stretch assignments that involve several departments. The role applies and extends existing guidelines, works alongside the design systems and sites groups, and influences the interface of the company's digital products.
Each day, the manager reviews design work with direct, constructive comments, produces design personally when the team needs extra capacity or the task is complex, supports individual designers as they grow, and refines production workflows. The manager partners with marketing, web engineering and the Design Systems Director to set and verify outcomes, improves design systems and guidelines, coordinates with other design leaders, and helps colleagues and the wider open source community see the value design brings.
The listing looks for a portfolio that shows leadership of design process and output in complex organisations, along with experience running intricate projects and a team while remaining involved in design. Advanced knowledge of typography, layout, colour and systems is expected, as is a defined creative viewpoint that stays open to critique. Care for usability and accessibility and a commitment to mentoring are important. Candidates need a strong design education or a credible alternative background. Internal events require travel: up to two weeks at a time, and up to four times annually.
