Aquifer is hiring a Development Manager to oversee technical execution quality, engineering capacity, and delivery commitments across the organization's development pods. Operating remotely and reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, this full-time role carries full people-management responsibility for all engineers, which includes pod tech leads and a technical architect. The position suits an experienced engineering leader who can balance the support and career growth of direct reports with structured capacity planning, roadmap execution, and production release reliability.
The person in this role will partner with the Lead Product Manager and technical leadership to map team capabilities, integrate AI development practices for better velocity and quality, and maintain the existing Ruby on Rails product stack. This position requires someone comfortable guiding distributed engineering teams, tracking quality metrics, and enforcing technical standards for live SaaS solutions.
Responsibilities
- Manage all engineers directly, including pod tech leads and a technical architect, overseeing performance, hiring, career growth, and daily support
- Oversee engineering capacity planning to turn roadmap objectives into practical delivery schedules
- Monitor engineering scorecard metrics related to quality and delivery
- Drive release reliability and production quality across development pods
- Collaborate with the Technical Architect to implement AI development best practices
- Support and maintain the existing Ruby on Rails product with a focus on technical sustainability
- Coordinate with the Lead Product Manager and tech leads on cross-functional delivery plans
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience managing engineering teams, senior individual contributors, or engineering managers, preferably within a Ruby on Rails setting
- Background in taking ownership of delivery commitments and release quality for a live SaaS product
- Experience leading distributed or multi-site engineering groups
- Capability to assess the technical output and judgment of senior or staff-level engineers
- Familiarity with setting and enforcing guardrails for AI-assisted software development
- Working familiarity with Jira and Confluence
Qualifications
- Experience conducting structured capability assessments such as evaluating a technical architect against defined deliverables
