Job Description

Mercer Advisors is seeking a Director to lead its Business Transitions practice, focusing on serving business owners, founders, and executives through M&A transactions and liquidity events. The organization is an independent fiduciary that integrates financial planning, tax, estate, and investment management, currently serving over 42,800 families across more than 110 cities.

In this role, you will act as a strategic bridge between banking, law, and financial advice. You will collaborate directly with clients and their external deal teams—including bankers and attorneys—to evaluate deal structures, model after-tax proceeds in real time, and translate complex deal mechanics into clear planning decisions. Furthermore, you will build and maintain a referral network of centers of influence within your market, represent the practice externally at industry events, and coordinate closely with regional advisory teams.

This position suits professionals who have spent their careers navigating deal rooms and want to guide business owners through major financial events. The schedule requires availability during standard business hours from Monday through Friday, with occasional early or late hours for project deadlines. Travel within your market and periodically across the country is required.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly on live transactions as a subject matter expert alongside integrated tax, estate, and financial planning teams
  • Interface with clients' legal counsel, accountants, and investment bankers to evaluate deal structures
  • Model real-time after-tax proceeds as transaction terms shift across structures, earnouts, rollover equity, and taxes
  • Engage business owners before, during, and after transactions to align planning strategies with deal execution
  • Coordinate structured handoffs to dedicated company advisors once a transaction closes
  • Build and cultivate a referral network consisting of lower middle market investment bankers, transaction attorneys, and deal accountants
  • Represent the practice externally via speaking engagements, industry events, and panel discussions
  • Collaborate with regional advisory teams to identify existing clients nearing liquidity events

Requirements

  • Possem 8 to 15 years of direct experience working on M&A transactions
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate deal structure, valuation, and transaction mechanics effectively
  • Direct background advising privately held business owners, founders, or executives
  • Series 65 license or ability to obtain it within 90 days of employment
  • Bachelor degree
  • Availability during standard business hours of Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, plus early or late hours as needed

Qualifications

  • Background in lower middle market investment banking, M&A advisory, corporate development, transaction law, M&A tax, or wealth advisory
  • Designations such as CFP, CFA, CPA, or JD
  • Advanced degree such as an MBA or JD
