Life360 seeks a Director of Engineering to head platform and services development, overseeing foundational systems like messaging, location tracking, cloud infrastructure, identity management, and partner integrations. Operating as a hybrid leader who remains close to technology, this individual will establish technical roadmaps, modernize older architectures, and maintain high standards for system reliability, performance, and security. The position involves cultivating engineering talent, mentoring managers, and collaborating across product, security, and data teams to align technological execution with overarching business objectives. Life360 functions as a remote-first organization reaching over one hundred million monthly active users globally with location sharing, crash detection, and tracking services.
Responsibilities
- Manage engineering teams focused on core services, location, messaging, cloud infrastructure, identity, and partner platforms
- Anticipate scaling challenges, reliability risks, and architectural bottlenecks ahead of time
- Define metrics for system performance, security, cost, and developer productivity
- Hire, mentor, and develop engineering managers, staff engineers, and technical leaders
- Create reusable APIs and platforms to accelerate product development velocity
- Partner with product, security, data, and engineering leaders to resolve cross-functional priorities
- Participate directly in architectural reviews and critical technical decisions
Requirements
- Over ten years of software engineering experience
- Minimum of five years leading engineering teams, including experience managing other managers
- Background in backend or platform engineering at high scale with distributed systems serving millions of users
- Demonstrated success in coaching and developing engineering managers
- Experience linking corporate strategy to technical execution and reporting to senior leadership
- Hands-on technical expertise in cloud infrastructure and distributed systems
Qualifications
- Experience working with AWS cloud environments
- Background in either B2B or B2C platform engineering
- Bachelor degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience
