Job Description

Burkland is a remote-first firm with more than 185 team members and over 800 clients, many of them startups and high-growth businesses. This Director of Accounting Advisory role leads the Service Delivery Team in the production organization, leading a group that includes Division Managers, a Project Team and an ERP Specialist. The posting frames it as managing managers, judged by how well the director develops division leaders and by the combined results of those divisions.

The director coaches division managers through regular one-on-ones and development plans, delegates ownership of outcomes, holds managers to agreed KPIs and addresses underperformance head-on. Aggregate measures include revenue per full-time employee, utilization, realization and growth, checked against the systems of record so leaders can see where teams need support. The role coordinates staffing and capacity with the Operations Manager, serves as the escalation point for clients, and moves teams away from simple report delivery and into proactive advisory. A large part of the job is driving AI adoption across production: running pilots and rollouts of AI applications across client accounting engagements, and tracking adoption through usage, efficiency and quality. The director also keeps work in step alongside the Director of Technical Accounting and presents production's resourcing needs to senior leadership.

Applicants need at least a decade of progressive accounting work, including one year leading a team at a public accounting firm, outsourced or fractional provider, or client-service practice. Managing a production group of ten or more accountants, directly or through managers, is expected, along with profit-and-loss ownership for a division and coaching experience. Comfort with AI tools is required, with a clear sense of when a person needs to check the output and how to keep client information safe. The target base pay is $135,000 to $150,000, with final offers depending on experience, location and total compensation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the division leads, project team members and the ERP specialist as direct reports
  • Coach Division Managers through one-on-ones, performance talks and development planning
  • Delegate outcome ownership and hold managers accountable to agreed KPIs
  • Address underperformance quickly, with clear documentation and follow-through
  • Hold the combined outcomes of all divisions accountable, measured on revenue per full-time employee, utilization, realization and expansion
  • Plan capacity and resourcing jointly with the Operations Manager
  • Be the go-to person when client relationships need escalation, and guide managers through at-risk work
  • Lead AI training and rollout of approved tools, and hold managers accountable for adoption
  • Present the production side's needs and staffing choices to top management

Requirements

  • Ten-plus years in accounting, including at least a year in a leadership seat at a public firm, outsourced provider, fractional practice or service-focused practice
  • Proven experience leading a delivery team of ten-plus accountants, whether directly or via managers
  • Experience coaching managers, running performance reviews and building development plans
  • Demonstrated ownership of division financial results, including revenue per FTE, utilization and realization
  • Experience matching staffing capacity to workloads
  • Experience handling client escalations, ideally with startups or high-growth clients
  • Comfort using AI in accounting and operations, with judgment about review and data protection
  • Clear, data-driven communication with senior leaders

Qualifications

  • CPA license
  • Project management background
  • Working knowledge of workflow and time-tracking software, plus client-intelligence platforms like Knownwell
  • Exposure to AI or automation in accounting workflows
