Pawlicy Advisor is hiring a remote Director of Engineering to lead its engineering department and oversee technical strategy, architecture, security, and team development. As the senior-most technical leader reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer, this person will shape technology choices, manage deployment processes, and guide the rollout of AI tools across the organization. The company operates a venture-backed, profitable platform that connects pet owners with insurance options through veterinary networks.

This hands-on position suits an experienced engineering leader who can balance feature delivery with technical debt management while collaborating closely with product, design, data, and legal departments. The ideal candidate will take full ownership of the technical roadmap, guide engineering careers through regular mentorship, and drive continuous improvement in release stability and software quality.

Responsibilities

  • Manage key architectural decisions including scalability, major technology selections, and carrier integrations
  • Oversee product and infrastructure security reviews, audits, and vendor questionnaires
  • Direct release management, continuous integration and deployment, and production stability
  • Prioritize refactoring and technical debt relative to feature velocity
  • Handle on-call rotation management, incident response workflows, and postmortems
  • Facilitate career growth, 1-on-1 meetings, and performance feedback for engineers
  • Hire and onboard new engineering talent to support company expansion
  • Evaluate and approve internal software vendors based on cost, security, and utility
  • Develop and evolve company guidelines and best practices for AI utilization

Requirements

  • Ten or more years of professional software engineering experience
  • Minimum of five years managing engineers
  • At least two years in a senior engineering leadership position such as Director
  • Hands-on expertise with TypeScript, Next.js, Node, GraphQL, Postgres, and AWS
  • Demonstrated background in application security and third-party compliance audits
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship
  • Availability to work mandatory Eastern time zone hours, or Central at minimum
  • Ability to work remotely from within the United States
