To support its continued growth under an annual budget of roughly $27 million, Bellwether is seeking a remote Director of Finance to lead its internal finance operations.
This position reports to the Senior Director of Enterprise Operations and involves working closely with the Chief Operating Officer, the Executive Leadership Team, and the Board of Directors. The incoming leader will own the organization's financial strategy, direct forecasting and reporting, modernize remaining manual processes, oversee accounting and external partners, and help build out a fiscal sponsorship program. This role suits an adaptable finance professional who is comfortable operating at both a high strategic level and maintaining a hands-on approach to daily execution.
The role requires an estimated 10% to 15% travel and applicants must hold United States work authorization, as visa sponsorship is unavailable. Candidates are evaluated based on nonprofit financial management experience, strategic financial planning capabilities, and leadership background in virtual environments.
Responsibilities
- Manage and grow the internal finance team by hiring, coaching, and supervising current and future staff members
- Develop and oversee annual budgeting tools while partnering with team leads to monitor financial progress
- Partner with the Director of People Operations to build and maintain compensation and bonus planning tools
- Collaborate with the Development team to track grant budgets, handle drawdowns, and update contract pricing tables
- Set the direction for financial modeling, reporting, and analysis to supply leadership with timely data
- Prepare quarterly financial reports for audiences including the Board of Directors
- Work alongside the business systems team to evaluate, choose, and implement new financial systems and grant processes
- Oversee accounting operations, external finance partners, month-end and year-end closes, audits, and Form 990 filings
- Supervise contracting and invoicing processes alongside the Senior Finance Manager
- Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer to establish and manage the fiscal sponsorship program
- Utilize artificial intelligence tools to enhance the speed and quality of research, drafting, and data work
Requirements
- Five to seven years of successful experience in a financial leadership capacity
- Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit accounting rules, grant management, and contract financial operations
- Track record in revenue generation, financial reporting, budgeting, systems integration, and financial planning
- Background working within a complex nonprofit organization
- Experience managing, hiring, and developing a finance team in a virtual work environment
- Authorized to work for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in finance, financial management, audit, accounting, or a related discipline
