In this position, the finance director takes charge of budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, regulatory compliance, and internal controls. This leader manages a collaborative team consisting of a Finance Manager and an Accounting Manager, serving as a trusted advisor to organizational leaders regarding fiscal trade-offs, resource allocation, and decision impacts. The role operates within a complex nonprofit environment encompassing multiple entities and grant funding arrangements.
Protect Democracy functions as a remote-first organization across the United States, providing shared workspaces for staff who prefer an office setting. The position requires periodic travel alongside attendance at team retreats at least twice annually. Final-stage candidates must complete a pre-offer background check.
Responsibilities
- Manage organizational budgeting, forecasting, annual budgets, multi-year projections, scenario analysis, and reporting.
- Supervise the Accounting Manager and Finance Manager while directing the broader finance function, payroll, and operations.
- Oversee financial controls, month-end close, annual audits, tax filings, regulatory reporting, and internal policies.
- Coordinate with legal, compliance, and leadership teams across multi-entity nonprofit structures, state registrations, and grants.
- Partner with the partnerships team to deliver accurate donor reporting.
- Act as a financial advisor to executive leadership to evaluate risks, strategic alignment, and trade-offs.
- Upgrade financial systems, procurement, contract-to-payment workflows, and reporting infrastructure.
Requirements
- Bring over 10 years of progressively responsible finance experience with nonprofit financial leadership background.
- Demonstrate expertise in nonprofit financial management, cost allocations, audits, and regulatory compliance across 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) structures.
- Possess advanced multi-year financial modeling, planning, and analytical capabilities.
- Show at least five years of people-management experience building high-performing teams, setting priorities, and developing staff.
- Have professional experience utilizing Sage Intacct software.
Qualifications
- Experience working in advocacy, legal, public policy, or mission-driven entities with complex programmatic and funding models.
- Familiarity with Ramp, Rippling, or comparable financial management platforms.
- Hold a CPA, CNAP, or similar professional certification.
