Job Description

The Pittsburgh Life Sciences Alliance is seeking a Director of Finance to act as the primary financial leader for the organization. Operating as a 501(c)(3) entity while maintaining the pace of an early-stage startup, the alliance connects research, clinical, and technological strengths across Southwest Pennsylvania to foster a global life sciences hub. In this role, reporting directly to the chief executive officer, you will build and direct the internal financial architecture supporting day-to-day operations, restricted grant funding, and emerging venture capital initiatives.

This position is well-suited for a pragmatic finance professional who thrives in an ambiguous environment and enjoys balancing high-level strategy with granular execution. You will oversee modern cloud-based financial tooling, collaborate with external bookkeeping providers, guide complex grant compliance, and establish workflows for early-stage investments. The position is based out of the Oakland office in Pittsburgh and requires working on-site at least two days per week, with the remaining time available for remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the chief executive officer to lead annual organizational, program, and funder budgeting processes
  • Produce rolling monthly and quarterly forecasts, analyze variances, and deliver executive-level reporting to leadership and the board
  • Direct external bookkeeping and accounting partners on day-to-day operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end closes
  • Monitor grant spending, allowable costs, and funder compliance across state, federal, foundation, and corporate grants
  • Design financial narratives and budgets for grant proposals across various donor types
  • Establish workflows for tracking and accounting for investment capital, SAFE notes, and convertible instruments
  • Serve as the primary liaison for external audits, including federal Single Audits under Uniform Guidance
  • Supervise operations staff and contractors managing internal systems such as information technology and facilities

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of progressive financial management experience leading core accounting, budgeting, and financial strategy
  • Proven multi-funder grant accounting experience handling restricted budgets across state, federal, foundation, or corporate sources
  • Hands-on experience using class, division, or customer/project fields for expense allocations
  • Familiarity with federal grant compliance mechanisms and Single Audits under Uniform Guidance
  • Understanding of capital deployment, venture accounting, and early-stage equity investment treatments
  • Proficiency with modern cloud-based finance tech stacks such as QuickBooks Online and Ramp
  • Residency in the Pittsburgh region or strong established community connections

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Annual base salary range between $140,000 and $160,000
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with 90 percent employer-covered premiums
  • Eleven paid holidays per calendar year
  • Twenty days of paid time off per calendar year
  • Four hundred one(k) retirement plan with a four percent employer match
