Job Description

Appen seeks a Director of IT & Automation to direct its technology department and guide how an artificial intelligence-focused organization functions. Operating in a remote capacity, this senior leadership position bridges strategic planning and hands-on execution, collaborating closely with the Chief Product and Technology Officer alongside other corporate executives. The individual chosen will govern enterprise architecture, security frameworks, service delivery, and automation initiatives.

The employer specializes in artificial intelligence training data, leveraging human-generated resources for over three decades to train and evaluate models in computer vision, speech recognition, and generative technology. This position suits an experienced technology leader who views artificial intelligence as a core driver for improving internal workflows rather than an optional add-on. Responsibilities span managing enterprise platforms like Microsoft 365, Salesforce, and AWS, maintaining compliance standards, directing third-party vendor relationships, and cultivating a proactive team culture centered on practical problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate the IT strategy covering enterprise technology, user support, security protocols, and automation.
  • Oversee endpoint management, incident response, and help desk functions.
  • Manage the health, configuration, and integration of core corporate systems including Microsoft 365, Salesforce, Workday, Atlassian, AWS, Databricks, and Anthropic.
  • Drive compliance and audit readiness for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 standards.
  • Implement practical governance for artificial intelligence usage to balance adoption with privacy and security.
  • Deploy artificial intelligence and automation to eliminate manual tasks across triage, provisioning, and onboarding.
  • Handle technology vendor portfolios, contract negotiations, license rationalization, and cost optimization in coordination with Finance.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing technical staff.

Requirements

  • Accumulate at least eight years of information technology experience, including substantial leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrate a background in managing IT support and service delivery within fast-paced software, technology, or services sectors.
  • Possess practical knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration and enterprise environment management.
  • Show technical expertise across cloud infrastructure, enterprise software-as-a-service, identity management, and endpoints.
  • Exhibit familiarity with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and security governance.
  • Display commercial acumen regarding vendor management, financial spend, and contract negotiations.
  • Provide proof of transforming artificial intelligence and automation into operational solutions for genuine technical issues.
  • Demonstrate executive presence with the capacity to build credibility alongside senior leadership and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Deep background working with Amazon Web Services and cloud cost management.
  • Experience administering Atlassian, Workday, or Salesforce platforms.
  • Familiarity with Anthropic or Databricks.
  • Exposure to site reliability engineering or DevOps practices.
