Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this senior leadership role focuses on financial governance, strategic operations, and fiscal health. Ballotpedia is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to delivering factual, unbiased politics and election data to voters.
This position suits an experienced leader who blends analytical rigor with practical problem-solving in a fast-paced setting. The incoming director will oversee human resources, financial management, regulatory compliance, and departmental administration while coaching a remote team. Daily operations utilize tools such as Google Suite, Slack, and Asana.

Responsibilities
- Design and execute hiring practices while managing payroll, contractor administration, and employee benefits

- Ensure state and federal compliance, handle legal claims, oversee insurance policies, and coordinate processes like Family and Medical Leave Act
- Mentor operations personnel, set departmental goals, and coordinate internal meetings
Requirements
- Have at least five years of experience in finance, human resources, operations, or a related field within a mission-driven, nonprofit, or fast-growing setting
- Possess expertise in budgeting, financial management, cash flow analysis, and forecasting
- Demonstrate knowledge of employment law, nonprofit compliance, and risk management
- Hold experience leading and mentoring high-performing teams in a virtual environment
