Job Description
Abnormal AI is seeking a remote Director of Security Engineering to lead its security organization and serve as deputy to the CISO. The company specializes in defending organizations against sophisticated email and collaboration attacks utilizing behavioral AI. This position suits a technical leader with a software engineering background who excels at building autonomous security teams, scaling cloud environments, and fostering partnerships across engineering, IT, and product departments.
In this capacity, you will direct major security programs encompassing AWS-first cloud architecture, vulnerability management, identity frameworks, detection and response, and secure-by-default platforms. The role requires translating complex technical risks into clear business terminology for the executive team and board of directors, alongside representing security operations to external customers and auditors.
Abnormal AI operates both commercial cloud systems and a FedRAMP-authorized environment, pursuing stricter federal authorizations as part of its growth. The ideal candidate believes in reducing operational toil, prioritizing preventative guardrails, and embedding security seamlessly into the software development lifecycle. The position offers high autonomy, executive visibility, and the opportunity to shape security strategy at a growing technology firm.

- Lead, mentor, and expand managers and senior engineers within security engineering and operations
- Direct the security engineering roadmap covering cloud architecture, detection and response, identity, and vulnerability management
- Manage cross-functional initiatives with engineering, IT, and product teams spanning federal compliance and AI governance
- Establish and champion engineering standards for the security division focused on automation and measurable outcomes
- Build hiring pipelines, handle performance management, and oversee succession planning for security teams
- Communicate technical risk to the board and executive team while aligning business goals with security strategy
Requirements

- At least 4 years of experience managing security teams, including management of managers or equivalent scope
- Practical software engineering background with a history of shipping production software
- Demonstrated history of building and scaling high-performing security teams
- Technical fluency in cloud-native environments such as AWS governance, Kubernetes, identity, and modern SDLC security
- Proven cross-functional leadership partnering effectively with engineering groups
- Strong written communication skills for creating decision-ready documents and async alignment
- Executive presence capable of presenting to C-level leaders, customers, and auditors independently
Qualifications
- Current experience as a security engineering manager or senior manager at a fintech, high-growth startup, or forward-thinking enterprise
- Background building paved-path or secure-by-default platforms that reduce both risk and developer friction
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks like FedRAMP, SOC 2, and ISO 27001
- Experience securing artificial intelligence and machine learning systems or governing AI adoption at scale
- Prior work in environments with scarce security headcount requiring heavy automation
