The company is hiring an Engineering Manager for the Production Engineering - Observability team in Bengaluru. This full-time, on-site role involves leading a globally distributed team that builds and manages critical infrastructure platforms, including metrics, logging, alerting, and capacity planning. The selected manager will guide enhancements to Prometheus-based metrics pipelines, log ingestion and retention, SLO-driven alerting, and capacity forecasting. This position is well-suited for a leader with background in platform engineering, site reliability engineering, or observability who can balance scale, reliability, and cost while working asynchronously.
In this capacity, you will collaborate closely with Product Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, and GitLab Dedicated groups. Responsibilities include mentoring team members, coordinating technical choices for high-cardinality metrics and time-series storage, reducing alert noise, and taking part in the Incident Manager On Call rotation. The organization values continuous knowledge exchange and expects team members to integrate AI tools into daily workflows to boost efficiency and support incident triage.
Responsibilities
- Lead, hire, onboard, and develop a distributed engineering team operating asynchronously
- Establish priorities alongside Site Reliability Engineering, Product Engineering, and GitLab Dedicated groups to deliver observability services iteratively
- Maintain the scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of metrics, logging, alerting, and capacity planning platforms
- Minimize noisy or missing alerts and telemetry gaps using SLOs, error budgets, and self-service instrumentation
- Direct technical decisions regarding time-series storage, high-cardinality metrics, log pipelines, and distributed tracing
- Participate in the Incident Manager On Call rotation to manage high-severity issues affecting GitLab.com
- Maintain a sustainable on-call rotation through time-zone coverage, useful runbooks, and post-incident actions
- Utilize AI tools and agents to assist with engineering workflows and incident triage
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience leading an observability, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering team at scale
- Technical expertise in metrics systems such as Prometheus and long-term storage
- Familiarity with logging platforms such as Elasticsearch or cloud-native services, alongside alerting design
- Experience utilizing SLOs, error budgets, and capacity forecasts for reliability and investment decisions
- Background operating a large software-as-a-service platform and investigating production problems
- Experience participating in and improving production on-call rotations and incident coordination
- Ability to articulate technical tradeoffs to engineering partners and stakeholders
