Job Description
Discord needs a hands-on engineering leader to run its Notifications group, which sits inside the Growth organization. The position is full-time and remote, based in the US, and the manager reports into Growth's Senior Engineering Manager. The group is responsible for the infrastructure that delivers every alert Discord dispatches, the coordination layer that balances notifications across categories worldwide, the in-app notification hub, and the settings and client-side experience users interact with.
Because these systems are business-critical and reach hundreds of millions of people, dependable operation matters a great deal. The team also builds re-engagement features that encourage users to return. The person best suited to this job is an engineering manager who keeps a close eye on technical choices, can defend them in detail, and thinks carefully about dependability, capacity and cost as usage grows.
Day-to-day scope: The manager oversees engineers who write services in Elixir and Python, build message-streaming pipelines, and run the Kubernetes environment underneath them. They set the technical plan that keeps notification delivery scaling with demand, coordinate the roadmap with colleagues in product, design, analytics and marketing, and rely on experiments and measurements to lift engagement and retention while protecting user trust. The role also includes recruiting, mentoring, establishing sound engineering habits, and improving the shared building blocks other Discord groups depend on when they contact users.
Responsibilities
- Guide a group of full-stack engineers who build and maintain the notification platform
- Chart the technical course for notification infrastructure so it keeps pace with growing volume
- Shape the notification roadmap with colleagues in product, design, analytics and marketing
- Lean on experiments and measurements to strengthen engagement, retention and user confidence over time
- Recruit, mentor and develop engineers while reinforcing solid engineering habits
- Work with other Discord teams to refine the common building blocks they use to reach people
- Join engineering leadership in long-range planning and in improving how the organization works
Requirements
- Five or more years as a software engineer, much of it spent building and running backend or infrastructure systems at large scale
- Two or more years in an engineering management role
- Working knowledge of production systems built with Elixir, Python, streaming pipelines or Kubernetes, with a sense for reliability and cost at scale
- Proven ability to work closely with PMs, designers, data scientists and engineers to deliver features
- Evidence of helping engineers grow in their careers
- Clear ownership of technical choices, with the depth to explain them to anyone at Discord
- Ability to encourage an 80/20 approach, rapid iteration and high-quality delivery
Qualifications
- Prior experience leading a team that owns a shared platform used by other engineering groups
- Experience launching push notifications or re-engagement products at consumer scale, including deliverability, rate limiting and policy concerns
- Experience spanning frontend and backend work
- A history of measurable results from experiments and data-informed decisions
- Familiarity with the gaming industry and regular use of Discord, with an understanding of its main features and messaging flow
