In this role, the engineering manager will direct senior and staff backend engineers as the platform transitions into a globally scalable, configurable system equipped with a robust experimentation engine.
This position suits an experienced technical leader with a strong background in distributed systems, backend platforms, and regulated industries. The selected manager will partner closely with product, data science, legal, insurance, and finance teams to scale the infrastructure, incorporate data and LLM-driven automation, and execute a multi-year technical roadmap. Responsibilities include defining long-term architecture, maintaining operational health, staying close to the code through design reviews, and mentoring team members within an inclusive environment.
The role is remote eligible within specific states where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity, though it may occasionally require visiting an office or attending offsites. Responsibilities
- Lead a team of senior and staff backend engineers through the next phase of the AirCover insurance platform
- Scale the insurance platform globally by making regulatory, pricing, coverage, and enrollment rules configurable
- Build an experimentation foundation allowing product and data science teams to test offers and measure attach rates
- Deliver a multi-year platform roadmap and global rollout
- Apply data and LLM-driven automation to enhance coverage decisions and user experience
- Define long-term technical strategy and architecture in collaboration with senior leaders
- Set priorities across regional expansion, attach-rate growth, and platform reliability with cross-functional partners
- Participate in design and code reviews to stay close to the codebase
- Hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent while supporting career growth
Requirements
- 10+ years of relevant experience in the technology industry
- 5+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager owning large-scale software systems
- Proven track record of setting and holding a multi-year technical direction on a live, business-critical platform
- Deep expertise in backend platforms, distributed systems, and high-availability services
- Strong product judgment demonstrated through data-driven experimentation and conversion improvement
- Experience managing and growing senior and staff engineers
- Strong communication and influencing skills with technical and non-technical partners
- Residency in a US state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity
