xAI is seeking an Expert Team Lead, SWE to oversee a team of full-time employees and contractors working as AI Tutors. The mission of xAI is to build artificial intelligence systems capable of understanding the universe and supporting humanity in gaining knowledge. Operating within a flat organizational structure, the company maintains a small, highly motivated workforce focused on engineering excellence. This position requires a hands-on leader who will both perform labeling and review tasks and guide team operations to ensure the delivery of high-quality training data for AI models.

This role is ideal for professionals with a background in data labeling, annotation, AI training, or content quality operations who possess strong prioritization, coaching, and communication abilities. Responsibilities include managing project quality, handling performance reviews, creating training materials, and tracking throughput via performance dashboards. Candidates must be willing to work on-site in one of the approved office locations.

Compensation for U.S.-based candidates ranges from $104,000 to $170,400 USD annually, determined by experience, skills, location, and education, supplemented by equity, insurance plans, and a 401(k) plan. International compensation details are supplied during recruitment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end quality and delivery for assigned Human Data projects by personally reviewing domain work for accuracy and guideline adherence.
  • Lead, coach, and handle performance management for a team of AI Tutors, including conducting reviews and maintaining records.
  • Participate actively in data labeling and reviewing tasks to uphold high standards and best practices.
  • Resolve operational bottlenecks, optimize workflows, and monitor performance through key performance indicator dashboards.
  • Design and deliver training materials, practice exercises, and certification benchmark tasks.
  • Collaborate with Human Data Managers, peers, and engineering teams to translate model needs into concrete labeling strategies.
  • Document project outcomes, propose process updates, and report status and risks to stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of hands-on experience in data labeling, annotation, content quality, or AI training and evaluation.
  • Professional background in building scalable and high-performance technology applications.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with data quality metrics, annotation processes, and guideline-driven workflows.
  • Foundational knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts and their reliance on training data.
  • Experience with performance management, coaching, training program creation, and certification frameworks.

Qualifications

  • Prior leadership experience managing small teams within data labeling, annotation, or related operational fields.
  • Ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced setting.
  • Data analysis proficiency, including familiarity with SQL and metrics-driven continuous improvement.
