Job Description
Tailscale is seeking a full-time Frontend Engineer to take charge of the technical direction for its next-generation web console. Founded in 2019, the organization builds software designed to make secure device interconnection effortless for users ranging from individual hobbyists to large multinational enterprises. This remote position operates at the crossroads of browser security, user experience, internal platform engineering, and developer tooling.
The person in this role will build frontend infrastructure allowing multiple products to deploy within a unified console environment, focusing heavily on identity-adjacent systems like authentication, secure cross-origin integrations, and session management. Duties involve creating scalable architecture patterns, partnering closely with product design, establishing testing strategies, and collaborating across various engineering and growth teams. Candidates should expect to participate in an on-call rotation to handle incident triage.
Tailscale offers a total compensation package including a base salary between CAD 218,420 and CAD 273,360 per year, equity incentives, and comprehensive group benefits with no waiting period. Additional perks include employer-funded retirement contributions, professional development funding, paid time off, paid parental leave, a home office setup allowance with internet reimbursement, and opportunities for global team retreats.
Responsibilities
- Shape and execute the frontend architecture for the next-generation console, overseeing application structure, routing, and state boundaries.
- Design and maintain cross-origin authentication and session infrastructure across services.
- Operate a frontend hosting platform capable of housing multiple company products under a single development workflow.
- Establish shared design patterns and tooling so non-frontend engineers can build production-grade user interfaces safely.
- Collaborate with the Product Design team to translate complex infrastructure ideas into intuitive experiences.
- Work alongside growth and engineering teams on feature rollouts, experimentation, and analytics instrumentation.
- Define and elevate frontend testing strategies, covering integration and end-to-end testing.
- Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation to mitigate and triage incidents.
Requirements
- Deep background in building and operating production React applications at scale.
- Solid understanding of web platform fundamentals including HTTP semantics, browser security, CORS, and authentication flows.
- Experience constructing internal platforms, shared libraries, or frameworks with strong guardrails.
- Demonstrated ability to drive a unified console vision across distinct frontend codebases.
- Strong judgment in frontend architecture regarding standardization and abstraction.
- Background in designing scalable testing strategies that simplify processes for product engineers.
- Strong collaboration, written, and verbal communication skills.
- High level of autonomy and ownership when navigating ambiguity.
Qualifications
- Experience optimizing codebases and tooling for AI-assisted development and LLM-based agents.
- Familiarity with design systems, component libraries, and connecting design tools to production workflows.
- Experience with progressive delivery patterns, feature flagging, and experimentation systems.
- Background working on identity, administrative, security-sensitive, or B2B SaaS products.
