Job Description
Torc Robotics seeks a Functional Safety Manager to guide the execution framework for deploying autonomous capabilities across various operational domains and platforms. This full-time, remote position involves establishing governance and visibility for safety-critical systems, linking safety objectives directly with program milestones from initial concept through deployment.
The person in this role collaborates with diverse teams including engineering, hardware, software, autonomy, operations, and functional safety. Responsibilities include coordinating hazard analyses, safety assessments, safety case development, and operational readiness reviews. The position also manages program risks, technical dependencies, and change impacts while driving integrated verification and validation planning across simulation, test environments, closed-course testing, and field operations.
Ideal candidates bring experience leading programs in autonomous systems, robotics, ADAS, aerospace, industrial automation, or similar safety-critical sectors. Applicants must have practical background in applying ISO 26262 across the safety lifecycle, alongside familiarity with safety lifecycle artifacts and risk management principles.
Responsibilities

- Manage program risks, technical dependencies, and change impacts across systems, software, hardware, perception, localization, controls, and operational teams
- Monitor safety and program metrics to identify issues impacting performance, safety, regulatory compliance, or delivery
- Facilitate executive reviews and technical governance forums to provide visibility into program health, residual risk, and safety readiness
Requirements
- Experience leading programs involving autonomous systems, ADAS, robotics, aerospace, industrial automation, or other safety-critical platforms
- Demonstrated experience applying ISO 26262 across the safety lifecycle, including HARA, safety goals, functional and technical safety concepts, and ASIL decomposition
- Familiarity with safety lifecycle artifacts such as Item Definitions, FMEA/FMEDA, Safety Requirements, Safety Plans, Safety Cases, and V&V strategies
- Ability to align engineering execution with safety assurance objectives while maintaining program delivery commitments
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of ISO 21448 (SOTIF) and related standards like IEC 61508, UL 4600, or ISO/PAS 8800
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field plus 6+ years of experience
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field plus 3+ years of experience
- PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field plus 1+ years of experience
