Job Description
Accela, a cloud-based government software provider operating for nearly twenty years, is looking for a Head of AI Strategy & Operations for a remote, full-time position. The company delivers solutions that help agencies improve transparency, boost efficiency, and enhance community engagement. In this newly defined role, the chosen professional will direct enterprise-wide artificial intelligence strategy, establish practical standards, and guide investments to transition the organization into an AI-first enterprise.
This position requires close collaboration across multiple departments including Product, Engineering, IT, Legal, Security, Privacy, GRC, HR, Finance, and Procurement. The ideal candidate will blend strategic planning with hands-on technical expertise in machine learning systems, large language models, and agentic workflows. While individual departments continue to manage their own day-to-day operations and outcomes, this leader maintains organization-wide portfolio visibility, creates governance frameworks, sets technical standards, and oversees employee adoption initiatives.
Candidates will spearhead executive scorecards, evaluate build-versus-buy technology choices, and help translate complex regulatory obligations into clear operational policies. The role suits a strategic leader capable of turning abstract technical concepts into structured requirements, managing cross-functional initiatives, and facilitating executive decisions without requiring direct managerial authority over every participating team.
Responsibilities
- Formulate enterprise AI strategy, investment priorities, and capability assessments aligned with organizational goals and risk thresholds.
- Identify and prioritize high-value AI opportunities with business and technical leaders by evaluating expected returns, technical readiness, data needs, and costs.
- Design and implement AI governance processes, risk categories, and approval criteria.
- Translate legal, regulatory, contractual, and government customer policies into practical compliance standards for security, data privacy, human oversight, and evaluation.
- Maintain a comprehensive company-wide portfolio of approved AI tools, owners, investments, dependencies, and risks.
- Drive employee adoption through tailored training programs, practical guides, office hours, and an internal champion network.
- Partner with engineering and IT teams to select tools, minimize redundancy, and establish technical standards covering access controls, activity logging, and incident response.
- Develop an executive scorecard measuring adoption rates, business outcomes, reliability, costs, and risk factors in coordination with Finance.
Requirements
- At least six years of professional background in artificial intelligence, AI strategy, or technology strategy.
- Demonstrated history of leading complex initiatives involving multiple cross-functional teams.
- Direct experience designing enterprise AI or technology governance frameworks, operating standards, and adoption programs.
- Hands-on technical familiarity with large language models, retrieval systems, autonomous agents, workflow automation, and AI evaluation methods.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and facilitation abilities to lead through influence without direct authority.
Qualifications
- Possession of relevant credentials such as IAPP AIGP, ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer, ISACA AAISM, CRISC, or CGEIT, or equivalent practical experience implementing enterprise AI governance.
- Prior background working within enterprise SaaS, GovTech, or similarly regulated environments.
- Experience collaborating directly with security, risk, or compliance departments.
- Previous success establishing employee learning programs, internal AI capabilities, or champion networks.
