M3 USA is hiring a remote Head of Engineering for PracticeMatch, its profitable physician-recruiting data subsidiary. Founded in 2000, M3 is a global provider of digital healthcare solutions backed by Sony start-up capital, recognized on the Fortune Future 50 and Forbes Global 2000 lists. In this role, you will report directly to the CEO of PracticeMatch and M3 USA, leading a dedicated engineering and QA team through an incremental modernization of a live legacy platform.
This position requires a hands-on technical leader who remains active in the code weekly, writing, reviewing, and designing solutions while partnering closely with the Head of Product and M3 USA's CTO. You will transition the current ColdFusion and SQL Server architecture over to TypeScript and Python in the cloud using AWS or Azure, introduce Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for physician searches, and integrate AI coding tools into daily development workflows.
The ideal candidate possesses deep technical breadth across web architecture, databases, infrastructure, and security, combined with a strong track record of migrating live legacy systems without disrupting daily business operations. This position suits a collaborative builder who prefers leading by example over managing from a distance through layers of bureaucracy. Candidates do not need prior ColdFusion or healthcare industry experience, but must be ready to deliver reliable, predictable software releases that support the company's growth.
Responsibilities
- Lead the incremental modernization of the PracticeMatch technology platform from legacy systems to TypeScript and Python in the cloud
- Write, review, and design significant code on a weekly basis while guiding the engineering and QA team
- Establish robust foundations including test automation, CI/CD pipelines, observability systems, and cloud platform infrastructure
- Own production engineering responses to ensure important issues are resolved at the root cause rather than treating symptoms
- Collaborate with the Head of Product to align engineering delivery schedules with business objectives and sales forecasts
- Incorporate AI tooling and agentic coding workflows into repository practices, quality gates, and review processes
- Work alongside M3 USA's CTO to align on shared technical strategies and organizational standards
Requirements
- 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience with significant hands-on technical involvement
- 5+ years of engineering leadership experience including direct management of engineering teams
- Demonstrated background in successfully leading legacy system modernization or platform migration efforts
- Practical experience working in SaaS, data, or platform product environments
- Expert-level knowledge of web application architecture, modern web technologies, React or equivalent front-end frameworks, and RESTful APIs
- Experience operating CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and observability systems
- Working familiarity with agentic coding tools like Claude Code or Codex along with production reliability techniques
- Ability to work fully remotely within the United States
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
