The enterprise seeks a Head of Legal to join its leadership team and work closely with the co-founders. In this position, the individual will direct all legal operations, covering regulatory matters, product development, privacy compliance, commercial agreements, corporate governance, employment issues, intellectual property, and litigation. The role involves managing an existing in-house team alongside outside counsel, shaping company positions on children's technology and data practices, and integrating artificial intelligence into daily legal workflows to increase efficiency. Candidates should possess a strong history in consumer technology legal leadership, privacy governance involving minors, and financial transactions.
Responsibilities
- Manage all legal functions including product, privacy, commercial, corporate, employment, intellectual property, regulatory, and litigation matters
- Define company positions and public stances regarding AI usage for children, online shared spaces for minors, and children's monetization practices
- Collaborate early with product, engineering, and partnership divisions to accelerate shipping times while maintaining legal guardrails
- Turn around standard contracts within hours and resolve product inquiries within two days
- Draft reusable playbooks for district data agreements, partnerships, and vendor transactions
- Lead and expand the internal legal team and oversee outside counsel performance and budgets
- Utilize artificial intelligence tools for contract review, data agreements, and privacy assessments
- Partner with the Chief Financial Officer on mergers and acquisitions, capital raises, and board management
Requirements
- Previous experience leading legal departments at consumer technology companies with staff between 100 and 1,000 employees
- Demonstrated expertise managing privacy for consumer applications, specifically concerning children under regulations such as COPPA, FERPA, state student privacy rules, CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, and emerging AI guidelines
- Background in supervising mergers, financings, and board governance alongside a financial officer
- Experience managing talent-dense legal teams and multiple outside law firms within specified budgets
- Hands-on implementation of artificial intelligence within legal operations
- Willingness to maintain significant schedule overlap with Americas time zones
Qualifications
- More than 10 years of overall legal experience, preferably involving child-directed goods or student information
- Background working in corporate strategy, operations, finance, or engineering
- Proven track record of improving existing corporate legal functions or managing distributed teams
- Capability to represent the organization effectively to external regulators, journalists, and strategic partners
