Job Description

Stedi operates a headless healthcare clearinghouse and revenue cycle management engine, providing modern application programming interfaces for exchanging critical transactions like claims and eligibility checks. The company is currently hiring a remote Head of Litigation to protect and expand its operational freedom in an industry dominated by legacy incumbents. This position centers heavily on affirmative disputes, regulatory enforcement, and complex commercial matters within healthcare and technology sectors.

This role suits an experienced attorney who can build cases before litigation occurs, direct investigations, and manage outside counsel efficiently. The Head of Litigation will partner closely with executive leadership, the chief executive officer, and legal and policy teams to resolve disputes through settlements, regulatory actions, contract adjustments, or direct connections. Candidates must possess strong writing capabilities, strategic instincts for launching affirmative legal actions, and the ability to operate at a fast pace alongside engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage affirmative disputes from initial theory and factual development through demand letters, regulatory complaints, and litigation.
  • Formulate legal strategies and direct investigations, data analysis, and preservation to ensure claims are immediately credible.
  • Handle regulatory enforcement tracks involving HIPAA Administrative Simplification, state insurance regulators, and federal or state antitrust authorities.
  • Defend the organization against commercial, customer, and related disputes.
  • Select and oversee outside counsel, manage budgets, and maintain internal handling wherever feasible.
  • Translate legal disputes into practical commercial outcomes like settlements, contract updates, or direct payer connections.
  • Establish and automate internal legal infrastructure including litigation holds, discovery readiness, matter tracking, and privilege hygiene.
  • Provide executive leadership with honest assessments and strategic guidance.

Requirements

  • Possess at least twelve years of experience litigating complex commercial disputes, including first-chair experience.
  • Demonstrate experience on the initiating side of litigation by building and launching cases rather than only answering them.
  • Bring substantial depth in a combination of antitrust, unfair competition, complex contract disputes, and regulatory enforcement.
  • Hold a Juris Doctor degree and active membership in at least one United States state bar.

Qualifications

  • Background in the healthcare industry.
  • Background in the technology sector.
  • Extensive experience in another heavily regulated and complex industry such as financial services, payments, insurance, or telecommunications.
