OpenAI is seeking professionals for the Industrial Compute position to help design, scale, build, and operate advanced AI infrastructure. Within the Compute organization, staff members work across software, hardware, facilities, operations, and engineering disciplines to deliver reliable, efficient, and massive compute capacity necessary for training models like GPT-5.6.
This role suits individuals who enjoy tackling complex, ambiguous problems involving distributed systems, GPU fleets, power, cooling, networking, manufacturing, supply chain, and data center delivery. Practitioners collaborate across research, engineering, and infrastructure groups to eliminate technical bottlenecks, accelerate deployment timelines, and improve overall system reliability. Candidates should possess strong technical judgment, a bias for action, and enthusiasm for building infrastructure at an unprecedented scale to support the next generation of artificial intelligence.
Responsibilities
- Build, scale, and maintain global compute infrastructure
- Resolve complex challenges spanning software, hardware, data centers, and manufacturing supply chains
- Enhance the reliability, efficiency, performance, and scalability of essential infrastructure
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring new compute capacity online safely and efficiently
- Identify bottlenecks across physical, technical, and operational systems to create practical solutions
- Design tools, systems, and processes that improve operational execution at scale
- Contribute to the long-term architectural design and operational maturity of the compute footprint
Requirements
- Experience building, scaling, or operating complex technical systems
- Comfort working on ambiguous challenges where the path forward is undefined
- Ability to collaborate across disciplines including software, hardware, operations, and physical infrastructure
- Strong technical judgment combined with a bias toward execution
- Commitment to reliability, safety, speed, and operational excellence
Qualifications
- Background in AI infrastructure, high-performance computing, distributed systems, GPU clusters, or cloud-scale platforms
- Experience with hardware systems, manufacturing, supply chain, data center development, or large capital infrastructure projects
- Domain expertise in civil, mechanical, hardware, electrical, thermal, power, networking, controls, or facilities engineering
- Track record of bringing new technical platforms, factories, data centers, or large-scale systems from concept to production
- Experience working in fast-paced settings requiring both technical depth and fast execution
