The organization is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer located in Bengaluru. This remote position focuses on tackling complex technical challenges and providing guidance across multiple teams. The person in this role will spearhead cross-functional backend initiatives, guide modular architecture strategies, and establish engineering standards that maintain high quality and reliability. Suitable candidates possess strong systems and product judgment, excel at asynchronous written communication, and can influence technical direction across organizational boundaries without relying on formal authority.
Responsibilities
- Lead complex backend initiatives that span across multiple teams and remove operational roadblocks
- Drive modular architecture strategies for services, data, and platforms while modernizing legacy systems
- Define and refine technical standards covering APIs, testing, security, performance, and operability
- Establish shared patterns for data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, and dependency management
- Participate in on-call duties and incident response for owned systems to drive architectural improvements
- Partner with engineering and product leadership on platform roadmaps and trade-offs
- Mentor intermediate and senior engineers while promoting reusable patterns
- Guide team-level adoption of AI-assisted workflows and establish safety guardrails
Requirements
- Proven track record of technical leadership spanning multiple teams or broad product areas
- Extensive backend architecture and production experience with complex applications or platforms
- Hands-on experience modernizing monolithic or legacy backends in production using modular approaches
- Ability to build consensus and document decisions clearly through written proposals
- Experience balancing user outcomes, technical health, and delivery speed
- Background in mentoring engineers and shaping standards via code review and documentation
- Production experience incorporating AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Go services and APIs at scale
- Experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native operational practices
- Background in Rust adoption for performance, security, or platform components
- Experience with Ruby and Rails modularization or monolith modernization
- Knowledge of PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queuing, and distributed systems
- Experience with security-sensitive software supply chain engineering or diverse deployment constraints
