Job Description
Zopa is recruiting a Senior Java or Kotlin Software Engineer in London to develop resilient distributed services for its financial products. Engineers process thousands of transactions a day, and the work centres on making intricate financial products simple for millions of customers.
Releases go out several times a week, and success is measured by the result for customers rather than by the amount of code written. The senior engineer builds large-scale distributed systems with complex topologies, takes part in planning and code review, and works in a product-led engineering culture with a flat structure. Test-driven development is expected, and behaviour-driven development is a strong advantage, alongside a firm commitment to quality. The engineer discusses goals with business stakeholders and tackles hard problems with colleagues in a candid, friendly setting. The toolset includes Kotlin, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker and AWS Aurora Postgres, although a willingness to learn any of those tools is enough if they are new. The role is hybrid, with two to three days a week in the London office.
Suited to a senior engineer who has built distributed software at scale, stays steady amid uncertainty and fast change, and combines strong coding with a collaborative, customer-minded approach.
Responsibilities
- Build dependable services that process large transaction volumes and protect customers' funds.
- Work on distributed systems with intricate topologies that have to scale.
- Ship changes quickly without sacrificing code speed or quality.
- Engage with stakeholders to understand and advance business objectives.
- Apply test-driven or behaviour-driven development throughout delivery.
- Take part in planning, code review and operational ownership of services.
Requirements
- Experience building distributed software systems at scale.
- Practice of test-driven development with a firm commitment to quality.
- Product-minded engineering approach, interested in the business reasons behind the work.
- Comfort with uncertainty, rapid change and hard problems.
- Collaborative and team-oriented in an honest, friendly working style.
Qualifications
- Hands-on work with Kotlin, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker and AWS Aurora Postgres, or readiness to learn them.
- Fintech or banking experience, though problem-solvers from any background are welcome.
Core Skills
Benefits
- Flexible working, including the option to work from overseas for as many as 120 days a year, subject to the right to work in that country.
