Job Description
Shift Technology builds artificial intelligence agents and Software-as-a-Service solutions that help leading insurance providers automate and streamline critical workflows. The organization maintains a global presence with team members spanning over fifty countries, focusing on accurate, explainable, and secure technology.
The company seeks a Lead AI Engineer to join the Data and AI Platform Engineering group. This high-impact position involves guiding the LLMOps roadmap and developing business-critical agentic use cases while supervising a small team of two to five professionals. The successful candidate will spend a portion of their time writing code and building prototypes while collaborating directly with software developers, product managers, and data scientists.
Key duties encompass designing production-grade agentic workflows, managing evaluation standards, overseeing token governance, and maintaining the Databricks-based machine learning platform. The person in this role will also partner with Cloud Ops to self-host open-weight foundation models and perform time-boxed proofs of concept for emerging techniques like fraud detection and medical billing analysis.
This opportunity is well-suited for a senior technical contributor who wishes to combine hands-on software development with leadership responsibilities. Ideal candidates excel at bridging cutting-edge artificial intelligence frameworks and production-level software engineering.
Responsibilities
- Design and deploy production-ready agentic workflows including tool calling, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, and structured outputs
- Establish standards for LLMOps such as evaluation frameworks, versioning, tracing with OpenTelemetry, and token governance
- Manage and extend the Databricks-based machine learning platform covering Unity Catalog, MLflow, and continuous integration and deployment
- Collaborate with Cloud Ops to self-host open-weight foundation models, optimizing inference latency and throughput
- Execute time-boxed proofs of concept for novel techniques like relational foundation models and agentic ingestion of medical billing sources
- Coach and mentor two to five team members while raising engineering standards through code and design reviews
Requirements
- Proven experience building production-level agentic systems using frameworks like Microsoft Agent Framework, OpenAI Agents SDK, PydanticAI, or LangGraph
- High proficiency in Python with strong object-oriented programming skills and experience writing clean, maintainable code
- Hands-on background with experiment tracking, model registries, serving, and monitoring using tools like Databricks and MLflow
- Practical experience with backend services on Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform, and event-driven patterns
- Fluency in the English language
Qualifications
- Solid machine learning foundations with exposure to graph machine learning, fraud detection, or claims data
- Ability to evaluate new technical approaches critically
- Proficiency in French
