Job Description
Movable Ink, a company headquartered in New York City with a global workforce near 600 employees, specializes in AI decisioning and data-activated content generation for marketing personalization. The organization is establishing a new Orchestration team tasked with creating a next-generation AI decisioning layer to coordinate messaging across mobile, email, and additional channels. Movable Ink seeks a remote Lead Backend Developer, Distributed Systems to report directly to the Orchestration engineering manager and guide the technical architecture of this new platform from its early prototype phase through production deployment.
This position demands deep technical expertise at the intersection of machine learning and distributed systems, offering high visibility alongside company leadership. The professional in this role will define architectural strategies, lead the hands-on engineering of fault-tolerant real-time messaging systems, and collaborate closely with product, data, and machine learning teams. Ideal candidates combine extensive software development experience with strong technical leadership skills and a commitment to operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Define technical direction and lead architecture, design, and implementation choices to bring the orchestration platform from prototype to production
- Design and construct scalable, fault-tolerant, event-driven distributed systems capable of managing high-volume, real-time messaging decisions across workflows and channels
- Manage core system components through their entire lifecycle, encompassing design, deployment, monitoring, and incident response
- Facilitate design reviews, address architectural tradeoffs, and maintain high standards for system design, code quality, and testing
- Collaborate alongside Product, Data Platform, Machine Learning, and adjacent engineering groups to convert complex needs into actionable technical designs
- Promote operational excellence via strong observability metrics, incident response protocols, and shared on-call duties for business-critical services
- Act as the primary technical voice on the team by mentoring software engineers and demonstrating robust engineering practices
Requirements
- At least 7 years of software engineering experience focusing on distributed systems
- Demonstrated background in designing, developing, and operating large-scale distributed systems that achieve high availability, concurrency, and fault tolerance
- Proficiency in building and operating backend services within modern cloud platforms using container orchestration
- Hands-on practice with service-oriented and microservice architectures including synchronous, asynchronous, event-sourced, and orchestrated communication patterns
- Solid foundation utilizing Python
- Practical experience evaluating and addressing distributed systems fundamentals such as consensus, replication, partitioning, back-pressure, idempotency, and failure handling
- Strong technical leadership capabilities to guide architecture decisions and mentor peers
- Clear communication skills for explaining technical tradeoffs to product and engineering stakeholders
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Elixir for constructing concurrent and fault-tolerant services
- Experience with Erlang, Go, Scala, Akka, or Clojure
- Prior work with workflow orchestration systems including Temporal, Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect
- Experience building, operating, or integrating with machine learning-driven scoring or decisioning systems
