As the Lead Security Engineer, you will provide technical leadership within a small security unit inside Platform Engineering. This is an individual contributor position focused on protecting the platform, customers, and data through hands-on technical work and cross-functional influence. Your primary focus areas will include application security, cloud environments, secure software delivery, and risk management for internal and AI-enabled systems. You will collaborate closely with product and platform engineering teams, translating security vulnerabilities into practical controls and embedding security practices into everyday workflows.
The ideal candidate possesses substantial hands-on security engineering experience in software or cloud settings, along with a track record of driving security improvements across multiple teams. While this position functions as an individual contributor, future opportunities to transition into people management may arise based on business needs and demonstrated readiness. Responsibilities
- Develop the security engineering roadmap and oversee complex initiatives from design through implementation and operation
- Design and build security controls and automation for applications, cloud infrastructure, identity and access management, and CI/CD pipelines
- Lead threat modeling exercises alongside secure code and design reviews
- Investigate vulnerabilities and security weaknesses, prioritizing findings by business impact and exposure
- Collaborate with system owners on remediation and create reusable controls to prevent recurring issues
- Enhance security checks within engineering workflows, such as dependency and secret scanning
- Contribute to security incident investigations, response processes, and tool improvements
- Mentor security engineers and guide product engineers through technical documentation and training
- Partner with Legal, IT, and Trust & Safety teams regarding technical controls, policies, and audits
- Measure and communicate control adoption, progress, and remaining risks to stakeholders
Requirements
- Substantial hands-on security engineering experience in a cloud or software environment
- Strong knowledge of application and cloud security principles, including secrets management, IAM, and secure software development
- Demonstrated ability to lead threat modeling, secure code reviews, and complex remediation work
- Programming or automation capabilities in Python, Ruby, Go, or a comparable language with backend code review comfort
- Experience building and operating production security tooling and integrating security into CI/CD or infrastructure as code
- Background in contributing to security incident response and working under pressure
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Google Cloud, Kubernetes, and Terraform or similar infrastructure tooling
- Experience working in e-commerce, marketplaces, or software product businesses involving API and account security
- Knowledge of securing AI-enabled applications, agents, data pipelines, or utilizing AI for security engineering workflows
