Job Description
First Help Financial seeks a Legal and Deficiency Recovery Manager to build and manage a structured post charge-off recovery program from the ground up. This remote position reports directly to the VP of Operations and involves establishing compliance frameworks, determining legal escalation eligibility, overseeing third-party vendors and outside counsel, and handling regulatory matters such as bankruptcies and SCRA compliance. This role suits professionals with deep experience in consumer lending compliance, legal operations, or collections oversight who want to operate autonomously and shape a developing program. While the position does not require a practicing attorney, candidates must understand subprime auto lending environments, consumer protection regulations, and deficiency recovery workflows. As program volume increases, the position offers opportunities for team leadership and direct report management.

- Manage bankruptcy filings and SCRA compliance across the lending portfolio
- Oversee third-party collection agencies and BPO partners through call audits, complaint tracking, and performance reviews
- Select and manage outside counsel relationships, track recovery costs against outcomes, and oversee active litigation

- Prepare quarterly Board updates and report critical issues to leadership

- Prior experience managing outside counsel relationships, scoping work, and reviewing billing
- Familiarity with deficiency recovery operations, settlement letters, agency placement, and multi-state legal collections
- Demonstrated background in non-prime or subprime auto lending
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree
- Juris Doctor (JD), paralegal certification, or Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) designation preferred
- Experience building or administering an agency compliance monitoring program
- Previous employment at a non-prime auto lender or servicer such as Westlake Financial, Exeter Finance, or DriveTime
