Job Description

Oklo Inc is seeking a Mechatronics Engineer to join its nuclear fuel recycling engineering team. In this role, the professional will design automated systems and robotic material-handling equipment intended for remote-operated processes within radiological hot cells for the Oklo Fuel Recycling Facility. Daily tasks include system design, computer-aided design modeling, requirement generation, prototyping, and integrating augmentation across various systems. The position requires cooperating closely with multiple interdisciplinary groups, such as facility design, chemical engineering, pyroprocessing, instrumentation and controls, software engineering, process modeling, quality assurance, and licensing. Oklo is developing fast fission power plants to supply clean, reliable, and affordable energy at scale, establishing a domestic supply chain for vital radioisotopes, and advancing nuclear fuel recycling to transform waste into clean energy.

This opportunity is suited for a self-motivated startup professional who prefers efficiency and minimal bureaucracy over excess hierarchy. Candidates should be collaborative, detail-oriented, creative, and enthusiastic about advanced fission and clean energy. The employer requires remote employees to travel to headquarters in Santa Clara, California, twice a quarter for team meetings, off-sites, and events. Additionally, new hires must spend their first two weeks of onboarding in person at the Santa Clara headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Design robotic and electromechanical systems for remote material handling in high-temperature, high-corrosion, and high-radiation settings
  • Define architecture, specifications, control logic, and performance criteria for automated material-handling and process equipment
  • Integrate automation hardware, sensors, and control systems to support reliable unmanned operations
  • Act as technical lead for automation and handling systems throughout their life cycle
  • Produce documentation to guide the fabrication, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of automated hardware
  • Write technical records for regulatory filings and internal knowledge preservation
  • Build, test, and iterate on prototypes for automation and handling subsystems
  • Write concise reports and share findings across different disciplines

Requirements

  • Possess an engineering education in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, robotics, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • Have 5 to 10 years of professional background working with automation or robotic system design
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience using PLCs, industrial automation, and robotics programming
  • Exhibit expert proficiency using CAD software, with a preference for Solidworks
  • Show broad familiarity with engineering principles and strong systems integration intuition

Qualifications

  • Experience working with robotic arms, conveyors, or alternative automated handling machinery
  • Background in designing systems for remote or hazardous environments
  • Familiarity with radiological hot cell environments
  • Experience with high-temperature equipment design exceeding 500 degrees Celsius
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and design for manufacturing
  • Experience using simulation tools such as ANSYS, ROS, or MATLAB and Simulink
  • Background in nuclear, petrochemical, or pharmaceutical industries utilizing automated systems
  • Experience deploying or working on pilot plants or unmanned manufacturing systems
  • Proximity to the Oak Ridge, Tennessee area
