Job Description
Hyperfine, Inc. is a health technology creator that developed the Swoop system, which is a portable, ultra-low-field, magnetic resonance brain imaging device cleared by the FDA to function at multiple patient care locations. The organization is seeking a Patent Counsel or Senior Patent Agent to join the legal department and direct the enterprise intellectual property strategy. Reporting to the General Counsel, the person in this role will oversee and grow the international patent collection while working directly with engineering, research, clinical, software, and artificial intelligence teams to protect key technological breakthroughs.
This position requires managing both domestic and international patent applications, collaborating with external legal counsel, overseeing intellectual property budgets, and conducting competitive landscape studies, patentability reviews, and freedom-to-operate analyses. The successful applicant will also assist with intellectual property due diligence for corporate transactions and guide internal partners on related risks and best practices. The chosen professional will operate within a dynamic environment focused on medical devices, artificial intelligence, and healthcare innovation.
Responsibilities
- Manage the global patent portfolio, including invention collection, drafting, prosecution, maintenance, and optimization.
- Collaborate directly with scientists, engineers, software developers, and business leaders to identify patentable technology.
- Handle U.S. and international patent applications alongside external legal counsel.
- Perform patentability, validity, infringement, freedom-to-operate, and competitive landscape assessments.
- Design and execute patent filing strategies that match business goals and the technology roadmap.
- Aid in intellectual property due diligence for investments, partnerships, acquisitions, and corporate deals.
- Contribute to trade secret, trademark, and broader intellectual property protection initiatives.
- Keep track of technological progress in medical devices, artificial intelligence, medical imaging, and software industries.
- Supervise outside patent counsel and manage intellectual property spending while maintaining quality standards.
- Educate internal stakeholders on intellectual property risks, opportunities, and standard practices.
- Help build and enforce intellectual property training initiatives, policies, and internal processes.
Requirements
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction for Patent Counsel candidates, or a registered Patent Agent admitted before the USPTO for Senior Patent Agent candidates.
- Active registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
- At least five years of intellectual property experience at a law firm or within an internal legal group, emphasizing patent prosecution.
- Demonstrated background in handling patent collections and advising on intellectual property strategy.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a technical field such as electrical engineering, computer science, physics, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, machine learning, medical imaging, or robotics.
- Authorization to work for any employer in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

- Familiarity with conducting intellectual property due diligence and supporting strategic transactions.
