Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, assisting organizations in raising developer output, boosting operational effectiveness, mitigating compliance and security dangers, and speeding up digital transitions. Over 50 million registered users and more than half of the Fortune 100 rely on this technology to deliver secure software rapidly. The organization maintains a high-performance culture that embraces artificial intelligence as a primary productivity multiplier across daily workflows.
The company is hiring a remote, full-time Principal Engineer for Monetization Engineering. This senior player-coach position involves establishing architectural direction for the Fulfillment platform portfolio, making critical technical choices, and collaborating directly with teams to carry out modernization plans. The Fulfillment system ensures users receive proper product access while managing seats, usage, and spending across Self-Managed, Dedicated, GitLab.com, and other deployment models. Candidates will tackle challenges related to scale, maintainability, and architectural complexity that have emerged over the ten-year history of the existing platform. The person in this role will balance setting high-level strategy across entitlements, licensing, provisioning, seat management, usage visibility, and cost management with hands-on coding, prototyping, and mentorship.
Responsibilities
- Design and communicate the long-term architecture and technical strategy for Fulfillment
- Assess the current platform to resolve risks concerning scale, reliability, performance, data correctness, operability, and maintainability
- Drive architectural decisions regarding entitlements, provisioning, seat management, usage visibility, and cost management
- Establish clear service boundaries, data ownership, contracts, and integration patterns across Fulfillment, Monetization, billing, Salesforce, and product services
- Lead an incremental modernization initiative to improve the platform while delivering customer and business value
- Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Product Management, and cross-functional partners to build executable roadmaps
- Engage hands-on with complex challenges, including prototyping, critical implementations, migrations, performance tuning, reliability upgrades, and incident learning
- Encourage practical artificial intelligence adoption, including agentic coding and AI-assisted development workflows
- Mentor and coach Senior and Staff Engineers while elevating technical decision-making standards
Requirements
- 10 or more years of professional software engineering background, including substantial experience at a Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leadership level
- Direct history of building, operating, or modernizing Fulfillment systems such as entitlements, licensing, provisioning, subscription lifecycles, seat management, usage metering, usage billing, or cost controls
- Demonstrated capability in guiding technical direction across multiple teams and converting architecture into reliable systems
- Extensive background with distributed systems, scalability, availability, performance, observability, data integrity, and failure-mode analysis
- Proficiency working in one or more of Ruby, Go, and Python with familiarity navigating both Backend and Frontend in a polyglot system
- Hands-on practice utilizing artificial intelligence in software engineering, such as agentic coding or AI-assisted development workflows
- Proven success modernizing mature or degraded platforms without performing high-risk big bang rewrites
- Experience formulating systems spanning multiple deployment models, including software as a service, Self-Managed, Dedicated, or disconnected environments
- Strong product and business judgment connecting technical investments to customer experience, revenue, operational efficiency, and time to market
- Excellent written communication skills with the capacity to influence senior stakeholders across teams without formal authority
