Masabi seeks a Principal Engineer for its Architecture team to help drive the fare payment revolution used by millions globally. This senior position focuses on shaping platform and data architecture, guiding complex technical decisions, and participating hands-on in implementation across multiple teams.
The role suits a technical leader who can transition seamlessly between big-picture system design and hands-on coding. Candidates will navigate technical ambiguities, establish engineering standards, and help optimize data storage, pipelines, and cloud services for performance and cost efficiency.
Masabi builds fare collection platforms operating in more than 250 global locations and partners with major transport companies like Uber, Moovit, and Transit. The successful candidate will join a collaborative network of innovators and help scale these transit ticketing solutions.
Responsibilities
- Define platform architecture blueprints, standards, and engineering best practices
- Direct data architecture and strategy encompassing platform data storage, structure, and usage
- Design and deliver robust, scalable, and cost-efficient services that align with the platform blueprint
- Contribute directly to code development, technical delivery, and code reviews
- Identify and resolve scalability, performance, resilience, and cost challenges
- Act as a senior technical advisor to influence cross-team engineering choices and standard compliance
- Contribute to technical roadmap planning, platform improvement prioritization, and request for proposal scoping
- Produce high-quality technical documentation and enhance architecture communication across the business
- Participate in governance forums and working groups for architecture and APIs
Requirements
- Experience operating at a Principal or Staff level across multiple domains or teams
- Strong background in designing and evolving distributed systems and microservices
- Hands-on capability in coding, design, and technical delivery
- Cloud platform experience, with a preference for Amazon Web Services
- Demonstrated expertise managing trade-offs in scale, reliability, performance, and cost
- Proven experience building and working with data architecture platforms, pipelines, warehouses, or data lakes
- Ability to convert loosely defined business and technical problems into actionable strategies
- Clear communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience defining engineering standards, architecture patterns, or platform direction
- Strong REST API design background in multi-service, front-end consuming environments
Qualifications
- Experience breaking down monolithic applications into microservices
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures including Kafka and schema governance
- Experience improving system efficiency and cloud costs at scale
- Familiarity with development languages such as Kotlin and Java
- Familiarity with data storage and processing tools including DynamoDB, MySQL, Snowflake, Databricks, and Spark
- Experience with infrastructure as code and CI/CD tools such as Terraform and GitLab CI/CD
- Interest in or exposure to production architectural implications of AI-enabled systems
