The organization is seeking a Principal Generalist Engineer for its Research and Development Team on a remote basis. This position is suited for an experienced technologist who can take complete ownership of complex technical challenges from initial concept through production deployment and operation.
In this capacity, the engineer will work across multiple technical domains, including software applications, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning when appropriate. Responsibilities span architecting scalable systems, resolving production issues, optimizing performance and cost, and using first-principles reasoning to make technical trade-offs. Candidates should possess a strong foundation in computer science and statistics, along with the versatility to navigate various programming languages and infrastructure tools.
Responsibilities
- Design and build reliable, scalable, and observable production-grade systems
- Manage systems through their complete lifecycle from problem definition to deployment and operations
- Work across application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning systems
- Debug complex production issues across multiple layers
- Make engineering trade-offs grounded in first principles
- Improve performance, latency, reliability, and cost efficiency
- Contribute to architecture and technical direction
- Write maintainable code and documentation
- Frame problems correctly to determine when to use machine learning versus deterministic systems
- Train, evaluate, and iterate on machine learning models while building reproducible pipelines
Requirements
- Strong computer science fundamentals including data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networking, and distributed systems
- Solid understanding of probability and statistics
- Experience building production systems at scale
- Ability to work across multiple programming languages such as Go, Java, Python, Rust, and SQL
- Understanding of system behavior under load and failure conditions
- Familiarity with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes
- Strong debugging skills and the ability to reason using invariants and failure modes
