The organization is seeking a Principal Generalist Engineer for their Research & Development Team. This position operates remotely on a full-time basis, focusing on end-to-end production systems that span application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning components. This role suits a broad technical generalist who applies first-principles thinking to resolve vague problem statements, reduces system complexity, enhances performance and reliability, and exercises strong debugging skills across multiple layers of technology.
Responsibilities
- Design and construct scalable, observable, and reliable production-grade systems
- Manage the complete lifecycle of systems from initial problem definition to design, data handling, implementation, deployment, and operation
- Work across application services, distributed infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning architectures
- Isolate and troubleshoot complex production failures across different layers
- Make engineering trade-offs based on first principles
- Enhance cost efficiency, latency, reliability, and overall performance
- Contribute to technical direction and architectural design
- Draft maintainable code and system documentation
- Frame problems appropriately to determine when to utilize machine learning versus deterministic systems
- Train, evaluate, iterate on models, construct reproducible pipelines, and monitor model performance, drift, and costs
Requirements
- Strong mastery of computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networking, and distributed systems
- Solid understanding of probability and statistics
- Demonstrated experience in building production systems at scale
- Proficiency in moving across multiple programming languages such as Go, Java, Python, Rust, and SQL
- Familiarity with system behavior under heavy load and failure conditions
- Comfort working with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes
- Advanced debugging abilities utilizing invariants and failure modes
- Familiarity with data systems, streaming architectures, machine learning infrastructure, and performance optimization
