Job Description
Elastic, known as the Search AI Company, is hiring a Principal Product Manager II, AI/Vectors to guide the strategy and roadmap for vector databases, embedding and reranking tools, and related functionalities. Operating within an organization whose search and AI solutions are utilized by over half of the Fortune 500, this senior position acts as the primary authority on vector search and retrieval techniques. The person stepping into this role will direct innovations across vector indexing, semantic ingestion, and hybrid retrieval, ensuring that the platform meets complex enterprise demands while adapting to advancements in artificial intelligence.
This position requires deep collaboration with engineering and applied research groups to evaluate architectural trade-offs, manage model lifecycles, and steer the development of developer-facing APIs and software development kits. Professionals in this role will define success metrics surrounding recall, latency, index size, throughput, and ownership costs across both self-managed and serverless environments. The ideal candidate brings extensive product leadership experience in technical infrastructure, data systems, search engines, or machine learning platforms, along with a solid grasp of approximate nearest neighbor indexing, similarity metrics, and generative model fine-tuning.
Responsibilities
- Manage the overall vision, strategy, and multi-quarter roadmap for vector databases and core search functionality from low-level indexing to developer application programming interfaces
- Perform market analysis regarding vector database trends and state-of-the-art model research alongside the model team
- Analyze the competitive landscape to refine product positioning and build user personas that direct feature choices
- Collaborate across functional groups to align product strategy with business objectives and prioritize capabilities using customer feedback
- Establish long-term objectives and milestones centered on vector use cases, document processing, and unstructured data management
- Allocate resources efficiently to guarantee prompt updates while coordinating with engineering teams to test roadmap assumptions
- Define and protect key performance indicators including recall, latency, index size, ingestion throughput, and total cost of ownership
- Synchronize priorities and shared metrics across research, cloud, and engineering teams while overseeing operational cadence
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of product management experience with a strong focus on technical infrastructure, databases, search systems, or machine learning and artificial intelligence platforms
- Practical working knowledge of vector search concepts such as embeddings, approximate nearest neighbor indexing, similarity metrics, and recall-versus-latency trade-offs
- Familiarity with hybrid retrieval mechanisms
- Understanding of generative models, model fine-tuning, model features, and document processing for large corpora
- Demonstrated history of launching developer-facing or infrastructure-facing products that achieved adoption at scale
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Master's degree in a relevant academic discipline
Core Skills
Benefits
- Competitive financial compensation based on duties performed
- Health coverage for employees and their families in many geographic areas
- Flexible work locations and schedules for numerous positions
- Generous yearly vacation time
